Introduction
Nowadays, most of the individuals do not seek health care because of different reasons, such as
limited beliefs, low confidence in the health care provider, past bad experiences, and many
others, as Jane Ogden described in the book The Psychology of Health and Illness (Ogden,
2019). Some other individuals wait until they can identify the symptom as abnormal or they
perceive the need for professional intervention to start looking for help. Another part of the
population chooses complementary and alternative medicine care as a treatment or preventive
care
.
“
Chiropractic has become one of the most commonly used complementary and alternative
medicine (CAM) therapies in the United States and Europe
”
(Beliveau, et al., 2017). Chiropractic
is from the greek -Done by hand- and its purpose is to
“
support the body's natural ability to heal
itself.
”
(MedlinePlus, 2014). Chiropractors provide a significant amount of care for babies,
pregnant women, and for individuals suffering from a variety of health problems. Most often
people seek chiropractic care for different health conditions related to the neuromuscular system
and musculoskeletal system. Chiropractic has aid people suffering from low back and neck pain,
pregnant women during and after pregnancy, and kids with developmental issues. Chiropractic is
also view as preventive health care because it restores balance and function of the body as a
whole and does not focus merely on symptoms.
Benefits and Risks of Chiropractic Care
Musculoskeletal disorders are the second leading cause of disability worldwide, led by low back
pain. Normally, a person suffering from a musculoskeletal condition such as, low back pain, neck
pain or headaches, go to a Chiropractic office after trying common medical therapies. Medical

therapies including opioids, anti-inflammatory drugs, spinal fusions etc. which have
demonstrated limited effectiveness (Goertz, et al., 2018, p.1). Spinal manipulation therapy is the
most common therapeutic procedure utilized by chiropractors.
“
They may also use other
treatments including heat and ice, electrical stimulation, relaxation techniques, rehabilitative and
general exercise, counseling about diet, weight loss, and other lifestyle factors.
”
(MedlinePlus,
2014). Spinal manipulation might sound scary, and often is one of the reasons that people do not
go to a Doctor of Chiropractic; another common reason is the cost of care. A person that is not
well informed and guided might think that chiropractic care will help only with back pain or
headaches, but has been prove that chiropractic helps to improve the well-being of a person by
restoring normal function of the nervous system throughout a spinal adjustment.
One of the reasons that Chiropractic care is widely recognized is because it is a noninvasive
procedure that aims to restore the organism
’
s function from the inside-out and use the innate
potential of the body to heal without the utilization of any drug.
“
Although chiropractic has an
excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The
risks associated with chiropractic, however, are very small.
”
(American Chiropractic
Association, n.d.). It is important to understand that the purpose of spinal adjustments is to
correct the misaligned vertebrae to release the pressure on the nervous system and restore the
communication between brain and body; thus healing can occur properly. Some patients may
react to the adjustment and feel some discomfort, but
“
research shows that minor discomfort or
soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours.
”
(American Chiropractic
Association, n.d.).

I wonder why society has adapted to find healing throughout medicine only. The use of
complementary and alternative medicine should always be integrated into the usual medical care
or used as preventive care. There are different types holistic care such as mind and body
therapies; biofield therapies, and/or manipulative and body-based therapies like chiropractic.
Chiropractic has been found safe with minor to no risk with many benefits and positive
outcomes. I have experienced chiropractic care and I believe that the human body is a whole
entity, spiritually, emotionally and physically. Chiropractic not only has helped me with
migraines but also with concentration and digestion. It is important to understand that health is a
state of well-being where the body is able to adapt to stresses at all times.
