Medical Legal Partnership Plan
The social determinant that I will prepare a medical legal partnership plan regarding is
the lack of access to affordable housing. Across the United States, many households face high
rents and scarce affordable housing options, leaving more people without access to necessities.
In the state of Indiana alone, there is a shortage of close to 121,000 rental homes for extremely
low income renters (Painter 2023).
This is particularly concerning for certain vulnerable
populations such as seniors on fixed incomes or those with disabilities who cannot work or do
not have sufficient essential income to cover expenses.
A medical-legal partnership between healthcare providers and legal aid organizations
could reduce the impact of lack of accessible housing by working together to create policy
changes that improve citizens' access to safe and affordable housing.
Helping them obtain
services based in equity both inside and outside their communities is a secondary opportunity.
By doing this, we would be allowing individuals more stability which ideally would improve health
outcomes through providing physical safety from crime and violence, by reducing exposure to
environmental hazards aside additional factors linked to equitable availability and distribution
proper stable living situations across all levels economic standing. (Chart Book, 2022)
The stakeholders in the medical-legal partnerships would include liaisons from public
health professional programs such as nurses, physicians, behavioral health professionals, and
pharmacists. I would include these four main types of professionals because we want to ensure
we have nurses who can answer questions on an as needed basis, physicians who can
coordinate care between different service lines (cardiology, pulmonary, oncology, etc.),
behavioral health to ensure the mental health well-being is being monitored and any issues are
addressed and pharmacists to coordinate all medications between all providers.
For the legal
stakeholders, lawyers, government agencies including city governments, Housing Urban
Development (HUD) offices, and local community action groups who would likely come into

contact non-profit organizations charities dedicated assistance to those who struggle financial
stability.
The general action steps involved in my medical legal partnership plan would begin with
identifying areas in need of housing assistance through census surveys and connecting with the
community based organizations for information.
This would provide a foundation to establish
issues affecting neighborhoods. Secondly, I would connect with the residents and legal
professionals to ensure those who qualify for assistance including healthcare needs.
The next
step is to develop policy reform in accordance with the standards safeguarded within the
nation's protection laws and to include equal access to affordable housing. Once these changes
been approved, implementing the policy by working with city councils and their committee
members to monitor certified landlord, to carry out regulations pertaining rights tenants and to
support them with all enforcement needs. Lastly, the highest level of success would be ongoing
cooperation, evaluation plans and final agreement statements that provide the much desired
stability and security in the community’s lives.
This medical-legal partnership seeks to mitigate disparities in healthcare system by
creating a collaborative approach between healthcare providers, legal representatives, and
public sector stakeholders.
When we focus on concrete and sustainable efforts, we realign the
power dynamics and put citizens, especially marginalized ones, as our top priority.
Overall, our
agenda aims towards creating access to resources that no longer exist under the pre-existing
system. This critical transformation means the citizens have a greater say in determining when
policy reform transpires.
This change empowers the community to make decisions that affect
people directly instead of relying on legal assistance agencies and other non-governmental
organizations.
The collaboration between medical and legal professionals gives vulnerable members of
society the ability to gain stability within their communities, crafted by public health initiatives
through population wide accessibility. On another level this partnership could also serve to

mitigate existing social inequalities that arise such as, but not limited to, immigration policies,
establish guidelines to support tenants and ensure fair practices across landlords, increasing
likelihood that someone could successfully obtain reliable income or preexisting prejudices or
attitudes.
In simplest terms, everybody wins.
The general expected outcome from this
implementation is ultimately more equitable health outcomes will be providing through increase
affordable housing units.
Additionally, the preservation of lower end property values and the
development of community groups would contribute to the increased well-being for future
generations.
The goal is to inspire them to lead healthy lives, free from oppression, hidden
costs, human suffering, environmental strain, neglect, or structural collapse which is the status
quo in place now.
When considering victims traumatized by events like natural disasters, medical legal
collaborations could bring further unity into reality. This could culminate a greater stability,
allowing for people who have been affected by social determinants to gain a better understating
of their healthcare rights.
