Health is maintained through a balance between "yin" (cold) and "yang" (hot) forces. A lack of "chi" (energy) causes illness. The body is viewed as a gift and must be valued through proper care. Chinese medicine is largely based on the concept that everything is made of an energy called “qi” and that the human body consists of complex subsystems of energy and matter. The hypothesis is that illness is caused by external and/or internal factors that disrupt the body’s natural processes. Overall health is considered to be harmony between the mind, body, soul, and the universe for Chinese Americans.

These can be treated with "cold" foods such as vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and chicken."Cold" illnesses include, among others, cancer, pneumonia, colds, headaches, and stomach cramps. These can be treated with "hot" foods such

pregnancy, during birth, after birth.
After researching I have found that birthing varies based on what feels comfortable to the women, some take practices from their culture and the American culture and decide what they feel is best for them. “
There are many traditional practices for pregnancy and childbirth. Women investigated the traditions through various means, and built their own perspective on each tradition by integrating an evaluation of the Chinese perspective and an evaluation of the American perspective. Women considered several factors in the process of evaluating the Chinese and American perspectives to reach their own integrated perspective on each tradition.
These factors included whether or not the tradition made sense to them, how the traditional practice affected their comfort, nature of available options, attitudes of female elders, previous experiences of their peers and themselves, and outcomes of temporary trials of traditional or nontraditional practices” (Saito M, Lyndon A). Ayanna Chavers (145 words)
What culture phenomena (biological variations, environmental control, social organization, communication, space, and time orientation) can impact the care provided in this culture? (
minimum 100 words
) – you must address AT LEAST TWO of these areas
– definitions are found in your chapter for this lesson. Based on information I have read I found that Chinese American culture is still struggling when it comes to communication barriers. Some biological variations the Chinese American culture faces is racism due to them coming from China themselves and not being able to communicate as well as facing assumptions.I have found that with this communication barrier its hard to finds jobs, and be in social settings without judgement.Another thing they are judged off is cultural differences which affects them. according to the article, “
Asian-Americans contend with many barriers to high-quality healthcare, including infrequent medical visits, language and cultural differences, and lack of health insurance” Ayanna Chavers 106 words Section 3: Each team member is required to do the following:
Identify at least one thing learned from your research above that you believe will impact giving care
AND what you as a healthcare professional will need to do to work effectively with this patient. EACH item must focus on a DIFFERENT concept.
●
EACH person in your group needs to contribute at least 1 item (
ALL points need to address different concepts
), AND
●
EACH point needs to be a minimum of 75 words.
I think after conducting this research, it has become apparent that when giving care to a patient who is Chinese american, we healthcare professionals need to keep in mind that there is a background of very traditional upbringing in chinese americans. It is very important to explain the importance of medicine and procedures necessary for the patient because many patients coming from this particular traditional background are sometimes told that it is better to leave the body how it is, rather than to continue with treatment, which could very much influence the patient decision on whether treatment is truly important or not. It is our job as healthcare workers to try our best to get the patient the most comfortable treatment, for which they allow us to. (word count: 127) Revised 2/22
Yareth -
After researching medical beliefs within Chinese Americans, I believe it is important to understand that they have traditional methods that follow modern methods. Chinese Americans believe in Western Medicine, but they also believe in holistic medicine. I feel that to work effectively with a patient from this culture would be to respect their beliefs of the elements of the Earth having healing methods. They find a larger meaning to the meaning of health other than just a physical feeling. Word Count: 79 Emilia Miller
After researching the chinese american culture. I learned that when it comes to the chinese americans and their birthing plans there is not a correct way to do it they may add things from their culture or they may not depending on what they feel comfortable doing there is no wrong way of a birthing plan in my opinion. When I am working as a Healthcare nurse I will make things as comfortable as I can for my patient as long as my patient is safe no matter the culture or race.
