Exploring Cultures and Ethnic Groups in America Team Members: Mia Bernadsky, Megan King, Halie Elliot Ethnic group: Asian Indian Americans Important information for getting started: For EACH section you MUST INCLUDE WHERE you found your information (i.e. URL to the site where you got your information). Remember, you need this for EACH answer! You must ALSO PUT YOUR NAME AT THE END of EACH section you completed . This allows your instructor to see which group member completed what portion of the assignment. To complete this template LEAVE IN the topic (i.e. Describe your assigned ethnic group and their culture) AND required word count (i.e. minimum 100 words). Type your response UNDER that heading. Section 1: Basic culture information: Describe your assigned ethnic group and their culture. ( minimum 100 words ) - Asian Indian Americans make up about 22.4 million, 7% of the U.S. population. In order to fall under this ethnic group you must have origins from the Far East, Southeast Asia, India, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, or the Philippine Islands, according to the U.S. census. Out of the subgroups, Chinese Americans make up about 24% of the Asian Indian population. Around 45% of Asian Indian Ameicans live in the West. 6.7 million in California, 1.9 million in New York, 1.6 million in Texas, 958,000 in New Jersey, and 852,000 in Washington. There are several religions that they practice. The most popular is Hinduism. They also practice Islam, Buddhism, Zoroastrians, Jains, Christians, and Sikhs. The Hindu Society of India helped establish Temples for worship, and Asian Muslims worship in Mosques and Christians worship in existing churches. There are more than 100 places for Asian Indian Americans to worship in the U.S. (Word Count: 150)- (used pewresearch.org and everyculture.com)-Megan King Discuss the family structure and gender roles of your ethnic group. ( minimum 100 words ) -. In Indian culture, the family structure has been very patriarchal. Family is a very important aspect of the lives of many Indians. It is very common for many generational families to live among each other. However, it is getting less common because of the spread of immigration. Females generally take on the role of caretaker of the household. The males are typically the breadwinner for the family and provider. The elderly typically possess greater respect within the household. The elderly typically carry on the role of bringing up children and guiding other family members. Asian Indian families value education greatly. Children are taught at a very young age that education is necessary for success. So, immigrant Asian Indian parents rely on their children’s education to help eventually provide for all of them. Each member of the family plays a role which helps Asian Indian Americans stay loyal to the culture of a traditional joint family in India and their culture. (Word count 160)-Mia Bernadsky Describe the role of animals/pets in your ethnic group. ( minimum 80 words ) Elephants, Revised 2/22
monkeys, and cows all hold symbolic meaning in their culture and religion. Elephants represent luck and prosperity, monkeys are believed to represent the god of power and strength, and cows are a sacred symbol of life. Hindus tend to not eat beef because catle are viewed as sacred. Muslims avoid consuming pork. There are often restrictions regarding meat in their diet, they may avoid eating meat on certain days or they may not eat meat at all. Dogs are kept as pets more often than cats. (Word Count 87) - Halie Elliot What are their traditions and holidays? ( minimum 100 words ) -The many traditions Asian Indian Americans have brought with them relate to clothing, events, music, food, and their religion. However, the main traditions include their holidays and food. Diwali is one of the most popular holidays celebrated all around the world by different Asian Indians. This holiday symbolizes the victory of light over darkness to Hindus and Sikhs. Asian Indians celebrate by worshiping the goddess of wealth, and they light oil lamps. This celebration occurs over the time span of five days. Holi is another celebrated holiday that symbolizes the beginning of spring. They celebrate with a festival of colors, dancing, and the use of vibrant powder dyes. Festivals, traditions, and holidays are the way Asian Indians express their values, beliefs, and culture. (Word count 122)-Mia Bernadsky What are the main social issues that impact your ethnic group? ( minimum 100 words ) - Asian Indian Americans face ethnic and racial discrimination on a regular basis. In a survey done by PEW research, Asian Indian Americans are more drawn to their ethnic identity rather than the pan-ethnic Asian American identity. They feel that there is a disconnect between how they view themselves and how others view them. They prefer the classification of their ethnicity rather than the pan-ethnic classification of Asian American or Indian American. Studies have shown that race-related stress has a negative impact on the general health and well-being. To get a broader understanding, researchers have implemented various theories and methods to obtain the information. Examples of these are, racial identity, ethnic identity, cultural values, and self- esteem. Most racism comes from the stereotype of immigration. As people call them foreigners, aliens, or exotic. These comments come from people who assume that Asian Indian Americans are not Americans. (Word count-145)-(used pewresearch.org and ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)- Megan King Section 2: Perspectives of healthcare within your group: What are their traditional definitions of health and illness and the health and illness beliefs of their culture? ( minimum 100 words ) Asian Indian Americans have various beliefs on health and illness. Some believe in Homeopathic Medicine. This is the practice of yoga and meditation. The routine of exercise and meditation is said to help relieve stress and strains to help achieve their full potential as a human being. Asian Indian Americans also use Ayurvedic Medicine as a means of preventive healing and treating illnesses. This is a spiritual healing that bases its cures on herbs and natural ingredients, like raw garlic and ginger. They typically don’t seek out mental health help like they do with their physical health problems. This is because there is a stigma about mental health issues in India. They believe that mental health issues will take care of themselves and that family should help instead of seeking outside help. Another issue with accessing medical help is the language barrier. Most Asian Indian Americans speak Spanish and Revised 2/22
studies have shown that only about 10% of healthcare providers speak another language other than English. They believe that they need to show characteristics of strength not weakness. Their ancestors view those who show weakness as worthless and deficient. These mindsets have been passed down from generation to generation and seeking out medical help is associated with shame. A fun fact from Asian culture is the belief that if a pregnant woman eats blackberries then her baby will have black spots, or if they eat a twin banana they will have twins. (Word count: 241)-( used pewresearch.org and everyculture.com)- Megan King What are some of the traditional methods of healing practiced in their culture? ( minimum 100 words ) Asian Indian American traditional practices were greatly influenced by Central Asia. Spiritual healing for physical healing was very influential for their traditional methods. Ayurveda is a system greatly used in traditional Indian medicine. Ayurveda translates to “the science of life”. It focuses on the holistic and prevention approach. So, the Ayurveda approach is focused on not only the physical aspect but also the mental and spiritual aspects. Their traditional medicine considers diseases and illness as an imbalance in the body or an influence of religion. Their holistic approach to healing this imbalance is through meditation, natural medicine, and diet. Indian American’s natural medicine can include things such as herbal remedies and massages. Asian Indian Americans' traditional methods of medicine are very intertwined with their beliefs and culture. (Word count 127) -Mia Bernadsky What are current healthcare problems experienced by people in this culture ? ( minimum 100 words ) Asian Indian Americans have a higher rate of cardiovascular diseases, and those diseases present 5-10 years earlier than in other ethnic groups. Asian Indian Americans consume large amounts of carbohydrates and fats, which can contribute to cardiovascular disease. They also have a higher rate of type-2 diabetes even though they have a lower rate of obesity. Cancers are the second leading cause of death. Men most frequently have colorectal, prostate, and lung cancer. Women most often have cervical cancer, breast cancer, and uterine cancer. The use of smoking and cultural smokeless tobacco also contributes to the prevalence of cardiovascular disease and cancers. (Word count 102)- Halie Elliot What are the traditional birthing rituals of their culture? ( minimum 100 words ) Female relatives are often present to offer support for the birthing mother. Men were traditionally not present in the delivery room, but it is becoming more common for them to be present. Pregnant women often follow a diet that restricts “hot” foods that are believed to increase body temperature, such as meats, nuts, and spices. Women often stay home for forty days after birth and are encouraged to rest and eat certain foods. There are often special religious ceremonies held during the first two weeks of the newborn’s life, including a “Cradle Ceremony” on the eleventh day to officially name the baby. (Word count 102)- Halie Elliot What culture phenomena (biological variations, environmental control, social organization, communication, space, and time orientation) can impact the care provided in this culture? ( minimum 100 words ) – you must address AT LEAST TWO of these areas – definitions are found in your chapter for this lesson. ALL OF US TOGETHER Revised 2/22

Social organization impacts many parts of patient care provided to Asian Indians. Families may have a designated hierarchy of decision makers, usually males. Modesty is important to be aware of, they may wish to be treated by a provider of the same sex or be uncomfortable with wearing an examination gown. Asian Indians may also have very specific requests for end-of-life care, and it is very important to them that family members are able to remain bedside. (Word count 76)- Halie Elliot The first immigrants of Asian Indian Americans were agricultural and manual laborers. Today, there is a higher percentage of Asian Indians that are in managerial positions than any other ethnic group. Immigrants tend to have a hard time finding employment in their profession due to lack of certification in America. Asian Indians own or operate about 50% of the motels in the U.S. Strong extended family investments help to buy the motels and help dominance within their community. 70% of all Indian motel owners share the same surname, Patel. This indicates that the members belong to the Gujarati Hindu subcaste. (Word Count: 100)- Megan King Communication plays a key part in the way we provide care to Asian Indian Americans. Asian Indians’ verbal and non-verbal communication differs greatly from other cultures. Social hierarchy in their society is a big thing. Being sensitive and respectful to the opinions and ideas of their elders can help impact the care we give to them. By being respectful and sensitive while also listening to the elders’ needs provides a way to show care and concern. Physical contact is a big no for Asian Indian Americans. Any physical contact between two people is avoided unless it is someone of the same sex. Remembering their physical boundaries when giving care to Asian Indian Americans will make them comfortable in your care. Other non-verbal communication like gestures is very different. Pointing your index finger or standing with your hands on your hips signifies accusations and anger. Understanding the different ways and meanings of their communication impacts the care given. (Word Count 157) -Mia Bernadsky Section 3: Each team member is required to do the following: Identify at least one thing learned from your research above that you believe will impact giving care AND what you as a healthcare professional will need to do to work effectively with this patient. EACH item must focus on a DIFFERENT concept. EACH person in your group needs to contribute at least 1 item ( ALL points need to address different concepts ), AND EACH point needs to be a minimum of 75 words. During my research, I learned that Asian Indian Americans can be more susceptible to cardiovascular disease and COPD. Understanding that men are often the spokesperson for the family will be important to remember when giving care. As a healthcare professional, I will need to be aware of cultural norms when explaining treatments and will need to understand how cultural diet and lifestyle play into cardiovascular issues and respiratory ailments. It will be very important that I understand what changes can be made to their diet and lifestyle while still allowing them to follow their cultural and Revised 2/22
religious norms. (Word count 98)- Halie Elliot From my research and understanding, I have learned that Asian Indian Americans are very loyal to their culture and religion. Their religion and culture even seep into aspects of medicine. Asian Indian Americans are very loyal to their understanding of health through their culture. I think understanding the traditional methods of healing, religion, and culture of Asian Indian Americans will help us impact the care given to them. Truly understanding their background helps healthcare professionals provide the best personal care for them. (Word count 82) -Mia Bernadsky I learned that the Asian Indian American community is very diverse. There are several subgroups of this ethnicity with many different beliefs and language barriers. I believe that it will be challenging to provide care for this community because of their restrictions on what care they will allow and how deeply cultural their families beliefs are. I think that it would be best for me to open up the line of communication with the patient and their family members to establish morale. I would also like to learn more about the behaviors and expressions to ensure that I don’t offend the patient or their family members. I think that it is best to always access every patient in a different way, but also uphold a professional standard of ethics. Every patient is unique and we should always do our best to make them feel safe, secure, and heard. This means learning as much as we can about them, their culture, and beliefs.
