Introduce author qualifications to write this book.
Dr. Gilead I. Lancaster is a medical doctor who specializes in cardiology. He is the director
of non-invasive cardiology at Bridgeport Hospital. He is an associate clinical professor of
medicine at Yale School of Medicine. Through his experience in medicine, I do believe that he is
a qualified author for this book.
Main Thesis, summarize the approach that the author will take to accomplish the purpose.
This book is about our American health care system reform and political pressures on our
health care system have negatively impacted individual care and the health system, an issue that
has only become more acute because of the COVID-19 pandemic. I believe that this book is
extremely important as the COVID-19 pandemic altered our entire healthcare system in a way it
has never been before. The main thesis of this book pertains to the need of a change of our
American healthcare system to better serve our patients and improve outcomes.
As I read this book, I noticed how the author uses the approach of laying out a blueprint
of how our healthcare system is now and how it could be changed. It could be changed by it
being run by healthcare providers and professionals rather than political parties. The author also
discusses establishing a ‘national medical board’.
The author does emphasize the importance of
separating health care from governmental and commercial pressures and incentives.
Whether and how the author accomplished the purpose of the book

a.
Use examples with page numbers.
i.
While reading this book I do feel the author accomplished the stated
purpose of the book regarding explaining the need for a more
comprehensive reformed healthcare system in America. For example,
Gilead states, “The truth is that it isn’t health care that is complicated, it is
the politics surrounding health care in the US that is complicated.”
(Gilead, p. 23, 2023). While reading the book I related to the part
regarding the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and how the author
directly relates how politics is related to healthcare in this department. I
have experience in the Department of Veterans Affairs as I have been a
nurse in the intensive care unit for 3 years at the VA. I have firsthand
experience with how the healthcare system works and could be reformed
by having healthcare professionals in leadership roles rather than political
parties.

Would additional evidence add or detract from the thesis of the book?

I feel that additional evidence would add to the thesis of this book. The

positively impacted and changed would allow for others to see the
immense need for this reform.
e.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of each major theme?
To conclude, summarize your overall findings about the book. Some points to consider
(again, this is not a checklist):
f.
Considering the book as a whole, what are the overall strengths and
weaknesses of the publication?
i.
When I consider the strengths and weaknesses of this publication the
largest strength of this publication is how easily understandable it is. The
author writes in ‘layman’s terms’ which makes it understandable for those
who are not highly educated. A weakness that I would consider would be
the lack of accessibility in this publication. When searching how
accessible this book is it appears that it costs approximately $30 on most
major websites such as Barnes and Nobles and Amazon which can be
difficult to obtain when on a fixed income or budget.
g.
Would you recommend the book to others? Why or why not?
i.
Yes,
I believe that this book is a thoughtful and compelling analysis of the
complex, costly, and inefficient health care structures in the United States.
I applaud Dr. Lancaster's recommendation for a new health care
infrastructure and his innovative ideas on how we can create it in today’s
society. I would recommend it to be mandatory reading for all
policymakers and healthcare administrators in the country.
h.
What lessons did you learn from the book?
Running Head: Critical Book Review
i.
A lesson that I learned from this book would be how important it is to
understand our American healthcare system. As a future nurse practitioner,
it is imperative to understand who governs our system and makes
decisions as well as how our processing works to better provide care for
our patients.
i.
How might you apply the lessons from the book in your own practice or
teaching?
i.
As a future nurse practitioner, I feel that I can take away my knowledge
about the complexity of our healthcare system, insurances, and political
tendencies from this book and apply it to my everyday practice. In doing
so I will be able to provide the most adequate and safe patient care. I will
strive to stay up to date on healthcare policies and procedures to ensure
that I am competent and well-rounded as a healthcare professional.
