Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) is greatly used in patients with all sorts of
conditions and diseases. It is termed “alternative medicine” due to the use of other types of
nontraditional medicine which are not used in everyday practice compared to pharmaceutical
medications. In this week's iHuman, our patient Laia was diagnosed with asthma, and was
treated with pharmaceutical medication for her treatment strategy. In the case her mother
requested CAM due to limiting her from the use of medication, I would have recommended
honey. In a study done with patients with multiple cough attacks per day and children with cough
attacks that wake them up found honey to be the best option for them (Yildiz & Yavuz, 2021).
The honey could be mixed with lukewarm water and drank for relief. There is another study that
reports that honey for up to three days helps to relieve cough compared to salbutamol, but
salbutamol helped more with relieving cough, and improving the quality of sleep of their
children (Oduwole et al., 2018). The resources used for CAM would be, National Center for
Complementary and Integrative Health website to seek more information as it states patients can
do meditation, breathing exercises, yoga, and nutritional approaches to help with asthma (Hopp
et al., 2022). The resources stated above would not change the education provided to this patient,
but be added to their education.
The education given for the patient would also include
drinking
a warm glass of water mixed with honey every two days or so at nighttime to prevent cough
attacks and continue using her albuterol inhalers for quick relief of symptoms.
