Co-requisites: NRS 250, NRS 255 Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Caring: Extend the application of caring behaviors in the delivery of nursing care for adult clients. ( FOK: Communication, Self and Society; BSN Essentials: 2.1; QSEN: Patient- centered Care) 2. Communication: Apply various communication techniques when interacting with clients and significant others. (FOK: Communication; BSN Essentials: 2.2, 6.1b, 8.1c; QSEN: Patient- centered Care, Safety) 3. Critical Thinking: and Role Competence: Utilize the nursing process and theoretical concepts in providing appropriate nursing care for clients with selected health problems. FALL 2022 4. Cultural Sensitivity: Extend culturally sensitive techniques when providing care to clients. (FOK: Self and Society, Global Viewpoints; BSN Essentials: 6.4b; QSEN: Patient- centered Care) 5. Evidence Based Practice/Research: Identify research/evidence-based nursing practice in the clinical setting. ( FOK: Scientific and Quantitative Inquiry, Mathematics and Statistics; BSN Essentials :4.2; QSEN: EBP) 6. Professionalism: Utilize professional standards of behavior while caring for clients. ( FOK: Communication, Self and Society; BSN Essentials: 1.2e, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3) Required Materials: Harding, M., Kwong, J., Roberts, D., Hagler, D., Reinisch, C. (2020). Lewis’s Medical Surgical Nursing: Assessment and management of clinical problems, 11 th ed. St. Louis, MO: Mosby. Teaching Strategies: Direct client care opportunities are provided under the supervision of nursing faculty or preceptor (for DEU) for adult medical/surgical clients in healthcare and simulation settings. These opportunities allow students to apply the theory and skills taught in NRS 250 and all previous courses. Course Assignments: Satisfactory performance on all written assignments is required for successful completion of NRS 250P. Please see NRS 250P Canvas site for assignment guidelines and rubrics. 1. Getting to Know You- written assignment. Due on first day of clinical. 2. Direct patient care (DPC) a. Weekly clinical paperwork/post-conference presentations/clinical reflection 3. Focused Learning Activities (FLA’s) a. Physiological Patient Assessment and Care Plan (complete 2 during semester) b. Planning a Behavioral Change (compete 1 during semester) c. Teamwork in the OR- complete after OR observation experience. Due ONE week after OR observation experience. 4. Simulation/”Clinical on campus” - see simulation schedule on Canvas a. All clinical groups will participate in 2 medical/surgical simulation scenarios in the Center for Simulation Education at NKU. b. Post-simulation reflection assignment is due ONE week after participation in simulation. 5. Skills Blitz- see schedule on Canvas a. All clinical groups will participate in a skills review/blitz during the first clinical day. The purpose of this activity is to review basic psychomotor skills prior to providing direct patient care in clinical.
FALL 2022 b. Students are expected to review skills taught in NRS 210L prior to attending the Skills Blitz. c. This is a non-graded activity. 6. Civility Presentation- All students will attend a presentation by Dr. Susan Luparell on Friday, September 9 th from 1pm-3pm. Submission of Assignments: Submission of assignments is determined by the clinical faculty. Faculty may require assignments to be typed and submitted on Canvas or clinical faculty may accept handwritten assignments and require submission at the end of the clinical day. NOTE: ANY COPYWRITED MATERIAL UTILIZED IN WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE IN THE STUDENT'S OWN WORDS OR CORRECTLY RECOGNIZED THROUGH USE OF APA FORMAT (PAGE NUMBERS, QUOTATION MARKS, ETC.) Students are responsible for retaining any materials returned to them until completion of the program. Faculty reserves the right to request this information from the student if needed. Course Grading: NRS 250P is a pass/fail course for both mid- term and final grading. There is no final exam associated with this practicum course. Grading Feedback: Students should expect feedback on assignments within one week of submission except when faculty provides notification via announcement of a different timeline. Mid-Term Grade: Clinical faculty will meet with each student at mid-term to review the students’ mid-term evaluation. Please see first page of Student Clinical Performance Evaluation tool for details regarding unsatisfactory performance at mid-term.

Dec. 8- Makeup week for faculty cancellation or University closure Credit Hour Policy Statement: In accordance with federal policy, NKU defines a credit hour as the amount of work represented in the achievement of student learning outcomes (verified by evidence of student achievement) that reasonably approximates one hour (50 minutes) of classroom instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work. For every course credit hour, a typical student should expect to spend at least three hours per week of concentrated attention on course-related work including, but not limited to, class meeting time, reading, reviewing, organizing notes, studying and completing assignments. At least an equivalent amount of time is expected for other academic activities such as online courses, laboratory work, internships, practica, studio work and other academic work leading to the award of credit hours. Estimates of the time required for a student to complete this course are: clinical days x 8 hours/clinical day= 112 hours of direct clinical time Preparation for clinical/clinical assignments= 2hr/week x 14 weeks= 28 hours Total time= 140 hours
FALL 2022 Clinical Attendance and Absence: Students must participate in 14 clinical days (112 clinical hours) in order to meet course requirements. If a student must miss a clinical day, the student must notify the clinical faculty directly to report their absence. The student will attend the clinical make-up day in the Center for Simulation Education at NKU. No more than 2 absences are permitted in NRS 250P. The fee for clinical make-up is $100. See BSN Student Handbook for complete Clinical Attendance and Absence Policy. Dates for clinical make-up: Saturday, October 8, 2022 from 8:00am-12:30pm (for absences during the first 7 weeks) Saturday, December 10, 2022 from 8:00am -12:30pm (for absences during the second 7 weeks) Please see BSN/ABSN Canvas site for link to register and pay for clinical make-up. Dosage Exam: Students will take scheduled dosage exams during NRS 250P. If the student does not achieve a passing grade of 80% by the third dosage exam, the student will NOT pass clinical and must reapply to the nursing program. See the BSN Student Handbook for reapplication/readmission policies and for complete Dosage Exam policy. Fit for Duty: Students may not attend clinical and/or simulation if they are ill, impaired or exhibiting any other conditions that may compromise client safety. See BSN Handbook for Fit for Duty Policy. Social Media: Students may not violate client privacy and/or confidentiality before, during, or after participating in any clinical and/or simulation experience. This includes, but is not limited to, sharing ANY information regarding clients, families, peers, clinical faculty, or the clinical site on any social media outlet. Violation of this policy may result in failure of the course or dismissal from the School of Nursing. See BSN Handbook for Social Media Policy. Classroom/Clinical Behavior: Students are expected to utilize professional behavior at all times while in the clinical and simulation setting. This includes, but is not limited to, appropriate use of cell phones, Smart watches (or other devices) and demonstration of respectful behaviors towards clinical faculty, peers, clients, and other professionals in the clinical setting, and appropriate behavior in all non-clinical areas of the health care facilities. Students are NOT permitted to use cell phones while on the clinical unit or in the simulation laboratory.
