Part 2
Answer the following 10 multiple-choice questions by choosing the correct answer. Each question is worth 10% of Test 3, Part 2. Test 3, Part 2 is worth 5% of your final grade in the course. Both Part 1 and Part 2 should be completed within 80 minutes of the start of the test, unless you have an accommodation for more time or unless you ask your DGD leader for more time (see “Tests” folder in your DGD Brightspace for Part 1). You will receive your grade for Part 2 the day after the test (and for part 1 within 3 weeks).
1.
Identify the problem in the following sentence, according to the principles studied in the course: “A suggestion has been made to cancel the editing workshops for staff.”
i.
Staff should be spelled as “stuff.”
ii.
Editing-workshops should be hyphenated.
iii.
The passive voice should be changed to the active voice to indicate who made the suggestion.
iv.
The active voice should be changed to the passive voice to make the statement more direct.
Answer: (iii). The passive voice should not be used as a “smoke screen” to avoid indicating who
made the suggestion.
2.
Which of the following is correct, based on the principles taught in class, about the following sentence in a research report about the Challenger space shuttle: “before authorizing the launch of a space shuttle, you need to ensure the safety of the O-rings.”
i.
The “you” in this sentence is acceptable when giving instructions to engineers working in a space agency but should not be used in a research report about space shuttles.
ii.
The “you” in this sentence is acceptable when giving instructions to engineers working in a space agency and may also be effectively used in a research report about
space shuttles.
iii.
The “you” in this sentence is not acceptable when giving instructions to engineers working in a space agency but may be effectively used in a research report about space shuttles.
iv.
It is never acceptable to use “you” in technical writing.
Answer: (i). Avoid the indefinite “you” in reports. Use “you” only when you are literally addressing a person (such as in the case of instructions or when genuinely addressing the reader. In the case of a research report, the reader is unlikely to be a person launching a space shuttle).
3.
According to Paul Monette’s account, what did the “Ferrari doctor” lack?
i.
The ability to express simple empathy and common humanity.
ii.
Optimism about the future of medicine.
iii.
Money to buy luxury goods.
iv.
Sufficient clinic space.
Answer: (i). The “Ferrari doctor” offered “cold comfort” by saying that AIDS will be a “boon to
medicine.” What suffering patients need instead is simple empathy and a feeling of common humanity. 4.
Imagine a report that states that “previous studies completely ignored the noise complains
of residents living next to newly built wind farms.” Which of the following edits would be recommended according to the principles discussed in class?
i.
Delete the sentence because alternative energy should not be criticized.
ii.
Change to the passive voice: “the noise complains of residents living next to newly built wind farms were completely ignored by previous studies.” iii.
Change to a more neutral tone: “previous studies did not take into account the noise complains of residents living next to newly built wind farms.”
iv.
Add a hyphen to newly-built.
Answer: (iii). Change to a more neutral matter-of-fact statement to minimize antagonism toward
previous studies. (ii) is not correct because while the passive voice is not wrong, a change to the passive voice is not required. (iv) is not correct because there is no hyphen in a compound adjective when one of the word of the adjective ends in ly. 5.
Which of the following is correct? (Oz is a fictional city.)
(i)
The amount of engineers, who were hired by the city of Oz, doubled between 2020 and 2021.
(ii)
The amount of engineers who were hired by the city of Oz doubled between 2020 and
2021.
(iii)
The number of engineers, who were hired by the city of Oz, doubled between 2020 and 2021.
(iv)
The number of engineers who were hired by the city of Oz doubled between 2020 and
2021.
Solution (iv). “Number” is correct for a countable noun that can be counted in individual units (1, 2, 3. . .). There should not be a comma before “who” and after “Oz” because the information “who were hired by the city of Oz” is restrictive and necessary to sustain the meaning of the sentence.
6.
Which of the following is correctly punctuated (the subject is the desserts served to passengers on the Titanic)? (i)
First-class passengers ate eclairs, third-class passengers ate plum pudding.
(ii)
First-class passengers ate eclairs; third-class passengers ate plum pudding.
(iii)
First class passengers ate eclairs, third class passengers ate plum pudding.
(iv)
First class passengers ate eclairs; third class passengers ate plum pudding.
Answer: (ii). A semi-colon is required to avoid a comma splice. Hyphens should be used for compound adjectives that come before the noun (first-class and third-class). 7.
Which of the following is correct, based on course materials, about starting an email with
the expression “I am sorry to bother you?”
i.
“I am sorry to bother you” is too assertive.

iii.
“I am sorry to bother you” is too apologetic and unassertive.
iv.

Answer: (iii). There is no need to apologize for making a professional request.

In Faria Sana, Tina Weston and Nicholas Cepeda’s article about laptop multitasking, what is the consequence of the fact that “attentional resources are not infinite?” (i)
Multitasking results in fewer attentional resources being available for the main task.
(ii)
Multitasking may be done only if attentional resources are increased.
(iii)
Professors should work to provide better attentional resources.
(iv)
Attentional resources require the help of AI.

(i)
Possessive terms such as “our” should not be used to describe Indigenous people.
(ii)
The word “fail” or “failure” should never be used.
(iii)
The past tense should not be used as the preferred tense when speaking about Indigenous practices.
(iv)
Indigenous people should be described with as much verisimilitude as possible.
Answer: (ii). See questions 7 and 8 of activity 2 of the DGD handout. 10. According to the principles studied in class, which the following would correctly complete the following incomplete sentence: Technical writing must be clear, concise and . . .
(i)
. . . follow ethical principles.
(ii)
. . . ethical in nature.
(iii)
. . . ethical.
(iv)
. . . be ethical.
Answer: (iii). To avoid awkwardness, it is best to express parallel elements in a similar grammatical structure (for example, see DGD Activity 7, question 7). (i) is not parallel because it introduces another verb, “follow” (also, if you introduce another verb, “and” should be added between “clear” and “concise”). (ii) is unnecessarily wordy. (iv) would have been correct only if there would have been a “be” before “concise” (which is optional).
