Reflection
While gathering information within my community for the specified clients, I began with resources I have become accustomed to using. I needed more than the prior knowledge for the hypothetical client-specific needs, but it aided my search as a starting point. As I started acquiring resources for the four distinct scenarios, I decided to begin uncovering resources for scenarios 2 and 4, as I have researched criteria like those listed. Afterward, I addressed scenarios 1 and 3, as I have yet to work with clients with similar specific needs. I felt as though while navigating and gathering information, there were times when I found myself navigating resources quickly and times in which I found myself challenged. I have been working in local Santa Barbara non-profits for approximately five years. Being a part of a small community and navigating resources throughout a pandemic has allowed me to uncover resources quickly. In looking for resources centered around mental health services, such as a BIPOC therapist and psychiatrist, I was extremely comfortable as I have previously located providers for myself and clients with similar criteria. I thought it went well, especially since both mental health providers were from the same agency. However, I feel it is essential to acknowledge that the providers have a lengthy waitlist considering the current need for mental health providers in the area. Furthermore, while navigating local community meetings, I have attended city council meetings, as information has influenced my current work with the community. Despite my knowledge of community resources, I did face challenges navigating resources specifically for the LGBTQ+ communities as I have not often provided services for individuals to this degree. I initially began my search for help for scenarios 1 and 3 with a local agency, Pacific Pride, focusing on serving LGBTQ+ communities in Santa Barbara County.

However, due to the specific needs I hoped to address, I also found myself exploring reviews left
for pediatricians and assisted living facilities and not solely relying on the websites for information. I feel as though drawing from others’ experiences can help develop an understanding of what one may expect if one moves forward with the resource. While navigating
challenges, I also struggled to identify which would be the best due to the financial burden that may be presented to the individual; however, since the budget was not mentioned, I decided to focus on the resources available in Santa Barbara. I felt that resources explicitly promoted inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community were easier to find in larger metropolitan areas such as Los
Angeles, despite challenges once I was able to find resources to help individuals with time. In navigating the resource search, I was surprised by the number of resources available within Santa Barbara and neighboring locations such as Los Angeles. Specifically, I am often challenged in finding affordable resources for low-income families or those with Medi-Cal insurance. Dr. Barry from Petite Pediatric was an incredible resource to me as she provides concierge medicine, treating patients in the comfort of their homes. Overall, I feel the resources were generally easy to find as I tried to locate the resources with a blanket google search after identifying those I had listed.
While navigating travel to the different locations, I feel they are easily accessible to residents of Santa Barbara city. However, not all resources were located in Santa Barbara city but in the neighboring town of Goleta. Considering the distance between agencies, Friendship Manor, the LGBTQ+-friendly assisted living facility, would be the furthest from individuals living in downtown Santa Barbara. The Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District runs throughout the south county, connecting Carpinteria to Goleta. If an individual were to take the bus, they would only need to take one bus, the 24X UCSB Express, and exit on the El Colegio &

Los Carneros stop. The stop is right across the street from the center. However, if public transportation is not required, an individual could take a 15-minute car ride north of Santa Barbara to the assisted living center; parking is limited. Overall, I found myself learning more about the community in which I live. This eye-
opening assignment highlighted the opportunity to challenge me to become more familiar with resources specifically for the LGBTQ+ community within Santa Barbara.
