How would the capability to provide telehealth services affect an organization’s ability to deliver quality, cost-effective, and accessible care for patients?
Telemedicine is a new foundational idea for expanding the world of healthcare from typical in-office visits to around-the-clock care. It allows healthcare professionals to provide medical care to their patients from wherever they are. The use of technology to create services like interactive videoconferencing, teledermatology, teleneurology, and telecardiology truly changes the face of medicine. Telehealth services significantly affect the ability of any healthcare professional to deliver care. It expands their ability to not only provide medical attention to those who are unable to attend an in-office visit but also allows for room for more patients. Patients can receive care promptly
without needing to spend money on gas or even an emergency department. Organizations are able to deliver the same care they would in an office visit while saving patients money for travel. Doctors and physicians can do follow-up visits and keep up with patients who have been discharged without disrupting the flow of patients in the office. These factors can, in turn, affect how many patients cancel or miss appointments, optimize patients' outcomes, and increase the likelihood for patients to follow up. There has been extensive research done on examples of telemedicine that have significantly improved the potential for healthcare to be more effective, organized, and available. “The telephone-based care and telemonitoring of vital signs in persons with heart disease decreased the risk of mortality and hospitalization and increased quality of life.” (Wilson L.S., Maeder A.J. 2015). There are so many different forms of these advancements that are allowing for opportunities like this to become readily available to people from wherever they are.
The practice of telemedicine is transformational and enhances care for patients and providers as it helps maintain patient flow, provides medical care that is accessible and efficient, and increases cost savings for both parties. Citations:
