Compared to the Canadian healthcare system, the US healthcare system has more similarities than differences. A global hospital quality survey conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) rated the quality of healthcare in both countries very highly. Both countries have relatively high life expectancy
and are fairly wealthy compared to other countries in the world. Despite this, life expectancy in Canada is slightly higher.
The Canadian government provides health insurance but does not operate hospitals or directly employ doctors. Unlike Canada, where providers are personally recruited, the UK government employs providers
directly (NCBI). Doctors work independently, despite the fact that in order to receive reimbursement, they must comply with insurance rules. Canadians have the option and do regularly to purchase private health insurance for a variety of services. For example, dental and cosmetic surgery are not covered by government insurance. However, there are minor differences in coverage between Canadian provinces that correspond to US provinces. One of the main differences between healthcare in Canada and the United States is the amount a patient
must pay for services. Additionally, according to the Canadian government website, Canadians typically pay their medical bills with taxes, but higher incomes are taxed at higher rates. In practice, this means that high-income earners pay more for health care than low-income earners. Per capita spending is low in Canada, in part due to the bargaining power of the government. For example, the Canadian government has more bargaining power than any private insurance company when it comes to negotiating price agreements with pharmaceutical companies.
