Sawyer Stock Ms. Shipley INQR101-B39 October 6, 2023 Research Essay Through my research on the internal combustion engine, I learned many things. Not only did I become well informed on my research topic, but I also learned many things about the research process. Coming into college, I never really had any authentic research training. I did not understand why peer reviewed sources are so important. I did not know how to use keywords and other useful search tools to properly narrow down my search results. I also now understand the huge importance of plagiarism including all of the ways it can be done. Research at Liberty most of all has helped me realize the numerous ways where I can implement my faith in Jesus Christ. My research on the internal combustion engine has helped me understand why things work when I really only knew how they work. I knew that a turbocharger uses exhaust gasses from the cylinders of the engine to spin a turbine wheel and condense air to send back into the cylinders. This creates more efficiency and in some cases more power in the engine. I did not know terms such as “cross-sectional flow area”, “flow velocity distribution”, and “flow speed and variation” (Capon 9). These terms help me understand the scientific way that turbochargers work. I also learned the implications of turbochargers. Lee says “More recently, automotive manufacturers are paying more attention to the use of the FIS with a downsized engine or a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) for improving the fuel economy while reducing the GHG emission. In general, the downsized ICE with a turbocharger performs more efficiently with
lower fuel consumption and emission” (Lee 1). My broad knowledge of this topic became greatly narrowed down thanks to research. I am majoring in Unmanned Aerial Systems and Aircraft Maintenance. I chose this major because ever since the beginning of high school I have loved learning about things through working on them. Anything from fixing my dad’s lawn mower to putting a 4.0 inline six engine into a jeep, I loved doing it. I still love doing it. This is why it is crucial that I understand more about the internal combustion engine because that is the primary way that drones and small aircraft fly. Through my research I can confidently step into my major and show future employers that I am well equipped for the job. I will have achieved my goal of doing what I love for a living and giving glory to God while doing it. Coming into Inquiry 101, I did not know what inquiry even meant. I thought it was just another class I had to take to get credits. To my surprise I have learned a whole lot about the research process and why it is so important in and out of college. Research will help me pursue my dreams as an aviation major by equipping me with the tools to become more knowledgeable on important subjects and helping me write strong persuasive documents on these subjects.
