Jamilat Campayne Professor Liss 10 May 2022 Assignment 5 Mechanical solidarity = interdependence through similarity Organic solidarity = interdependence through dissimilarity Work with your groups: • Part 1: Find or draw an image that represents mechanical solidarity. Explain why in 100 words. I chose this photo of an Amish family to represent mechanical solidarity because the Amish people are known for their shared values and lifestyle. Everyone within this group of people is expected to live under the same rules and lifestyle and if anyone dares to do the opposite of what they preach about they are shamed. Amish people depend on each other based on similarities, they thrive and survive because their environment is very stable and predictable. There are no “disruptions” and by disruptions, I mean anyone that is within the community that doesn’t share the same values and lifestyle as them because they would immediately be rejected from the community.
• Part 2: Find or draw an image that represents organic solidarity. Explain why in 100 words. I chose this picture of a normal day in New York City, modern-day to represent organic solidarity because as is shown in this picture, no one is the same physically and how they present themselves also reflects on some of their values. You can see the different attire which can also represent the different occupations that all these people have. Everyone is different, yet unlike the Amish, this Is a thriving society that has dissimilarities. New York City is the best example of a thriving society with dissimilarity, without everyone being so different, New York City wouldn’t be what is known today.
