Part 4: Quote response (30 points) Each quote below describes teaching and learning perceptions and processes within three different instruction areas. Select one of the following activity segments from the first bullets, a-d for each of the lesson belief or effective teaching choices 1-3. Explain how a teacher might accomplish that segment of the lesson while maintaining the beliefs or effective teaching practices that are described in that content area. Do not duplicate your activity segment choice from one to the next choice, (Numbers 1-3). For instance, if you choose to discuss how anticipatory set can develop historical perspective then you will not use anticipatory set as a choice for Literature instruction (#2) or for Mathematics (#3). Include in your response important elements (bolded information) that must be part of that lesson segment in order to achieve the overall instructional engagements as described below. (4.5 sentences per response; at minimum.) Cite examples or an explanation from the course textbook when you provide your response. Use the appropriate page number provided in parenthesis for your citations. Each lesson activity must have at least one citation. Part Four: Lesson segment choices: a) Anticipatory set; (chapter 4, 4-1) b) Introducing a concept with activities that define, give example or attend to academic vocabulary; (chapter 5, 5-4)

(ch 18 extended practice, the “you do” portion of the plan) Part Four: Content beliefs or effective teaching processes: 1 . History instruction engages the learner through the values and beliefs of other people in earlier times and places. It is important to bring students to deeper understandings about historical events by sensitizing them to the tensions that were felt and expressed by historical figures that experienced and lived out these events. Often times teachers have students study past events from a variety of historical perspectives in order to gain deeper understandings of the complexity of human behavior. 2 . Literature instruction : In order to process the various human conditions and habits when reading and reflecting upon characters and events the student must understand the underlying principles and craft that creates character development: thoughts, dialog and actions in a complex plot . For instance, the four typical character habits in a complex story might include: courage, passion, persistence, or integrity (honesty and well intentioned). Teachers transfer reading and writing skills by having students deep read or analyze expert writers such as Mark Twain (Huckleberry Finn) or Harper Lee (To Kill a Mockingbird). 3 . Mathematical instruction : Mathematics engages the learner in logical thought and reasoning in order to solve problems . One of the most effective ways to develop strong mathematical understanding is to involve students in games . Many students enjoy planning and strategizing
