HLTSTE001- Assessment What you have to do This unit is concerned with the essential knowledge required to effectively follow steps in the cleaning and disinfection work flow process. This includes having knowledge on infection control and Spaulding’s classification. Answer all knowledge questions below. Type your answers in the fields provided. Save your answers in this document then submit via the OLS. You may need to refer back to your learning resource. 1. In your own words explain what standard precautions are. They are intended to reduce the risk of transmission of human disease. Wearing PPE equipment. Gloves, safttygoggles, maskes, eye and facial sheilds, gowns, aprons, hood-protecting the neck, shoe coverings. We need to presume everything is infectious. Freash PPE gear after having a break. Hand washing-soap etc. 2. Name two main methods of cleaning used in the decontaminating area. Manual Cleaning and Mechanical Cleaning. 3. Name what personal protective equipment you would be required to wear when reprocessing reusable medical equipment. Gloves, protect the hands, gowns or aprons protect the skin and/or clothing, masks and respirators protect the mouth and nose, goggles protect the eyes, and face shields protect the entire face. The respirator, has been designed to also protect the respiratory tract from airborne transmission of infectious agents. 4. Define cleaning Pre rince, wash, rince and dry. The removal of contaminates from an object before it is sterilised.1. the act of removing dirt or something undesirable 2. the job or activity of keeping a place clean.Visable contaminants and non-visable contaminates. 5. Name two main types of soils. Visable contaminants and non-visable contaminates. 6. What is the time temperature relationship for thermal disinfection? Thermal disinfection is a method of sanitation which relies on moist heat to kill bacteria and viruses by exposure to a specific temperature for a set amount of time.• 70C for 100 minutes 75C for 30 minutes 80C for 10 minutes 90C for 1 minute. 7. Briefly explain in your own words thermal disinfection. The thermal disinfection process takes place when using moist heat to kill bacteria and viruses, by exposing them to a specific temperature for a set amount of time. The high-temperature process of Thermal Disinfection can destroy the proteins in bacteria- as the live proteins cannot withstand heat exposure of this kind. This results in the live proteins being destroyed, thus rendering the bacteria lifeless and inert. 8. The cleaning process depends on several factors. Identify 4 of these factors. The surface being cleaned. The natural and mount of soil on the instruments pH of detergent Quality of water Mechanical factors 9. List five categories of equipment cleaned in SSD. General Insturments Orthopaedic Instruments Respiratory Equipment Laparoscopy Hollowware 10. Name one advantage of thermal disinfection. Instead of using a chemical disinfectant, this process ensures no harmful chemicals are left on the medical equipment and reduces the risk that comes with handling dangerous chemicals. 11. Name one disadvantage of thermal disinfection. Not all items can be processed by this method.Requires regular maintenance in order for the washer/disinfector to work efficiently. . 12. In 1968 Earle Spaulding devised a rational approach to disinfection and sterilization. This is now referred to as Spaulding's classification and it has been refined and retained over the years because it is so clear and logical. Spaulding believed that instruments and equipment should be cleaned and reprocessed according to the level of risk associated with their intended use. In the table below, give examples of different items. Level of risk Application Process Examples Critical Entry or penetration into sterile tissue Sterility required scalpel, scissors Semi- critical Contact with intact non sterile mucosa Sterilization preferred where possible. If sterilization not Respitatory equipment, mouth guard, endoscopes. 2 LA020990 Assignment 1, HLTSTE001 Ed 1 © New South Wales Technical and Further Education Commission, 2016 (TAFE NSW – WSI), Archive version 1, March 2016
Level of risk Application Process Examples or non intact skin possible then high-level chemical disinfection required Non- critical Contact with intact skin Clean as necessary with detergent and water Bed pans, thermometers, blood pressure bands 13. Whether the cleaning process is performed manually or mechanically, the same basic steps need to be performed. What are these basic steps? Pre-rinse Wash Rinse Drying 14. SDS is a document specifying the properties of a substance, its potential hazard effects for humans and the environment, and the precautions necessary to handle and dispose of the substance safely .Find a SDS that you use in your workplace or go on the internet and answer the following questions: a. What section in the SDS informs us of the first aid measures? Section 4 b. What section on the SDS contains information on small and large spills? Section 6 c. How long is the SDS valid for? Update the information in an SDS every 5 years. d. What section on the SDS can you read toxicological information? Section 11 15. Read the following scenario then answer the questions that follow: After loading equipment into the washer/disinfector and choosing the correct cycle, you commence the load. When you return back to monitor the process cycle, the washer/disinfector has aborted the load. The printout is reading error. a. Who would you report the problem to? SSD manager or designated person. your manager or team leader b. What do you do with the load in the washer/disinfector? If an item is not clean or dry it must be returned to the clean up area for reprocessing.Where parameters have not been met, then the cycle must be cancelled, if it is not cancelled automatically. This action must then be reported and documented and the load reprocessed. 16. What do you look for when checking the printout from the washer/disinfector? Checking parameters for washer-disinfector 17. Why is documenting and record keeping important? Documentation must be kept on fault analysis and maintenance of washer/disinfectors as part of record keeping. It is important for sterilising technicians to have training and guidance in interpreting the report of the equipment printout, so that if there is a variance to the parameters it will be noted and immediately reported to the SSD manager or designated person. 18. Name the preparation and testing function carried out by the SSD operator for a mechanical cleaner used in the decontaminating area. a. b. Manufacturer's recommendations and evaluation of item construction and composition.Test, check and prepare all equipment for use in accordance with relevant standards AS/NZS 4187 manufacturers’ recommendations and organization policies and procedures. c. You should ensure the power is on, the lights on, and that gauges and equipment for validating are all functioning correctly. You will need to check that the water levels are correct and that the detergents are correct and feeding into the machines. Check the cleaning brushes are intact and have been thermally disinfected.Refer to WHS for each mechanical cleaning equipment in Common mechanical cleaning equipment above Safe work practices and standard precautions are followed at all times in accordance with legislative and workplace guidelines.
