Tri-Wheel Landing Gear System Hazards and Mitigation Strategies
I found your analysis of the hazards in the tri-wheel landing gear system very interesting. While we
tend to think of it as a simple system, especially compared to more complex aircraft systems, it still faces some
significant hazards.
One of the most concerning things to me is that the Cessna 152 or 172 etc, the most widely used aircraft
for private use and training, is particularly vulnerable to these hazards. This is because it is flown by many
student pilots who may not be aware of the risks or know how to handle them.
I agree with your suggestion that redesigning the hydraulic fluid lines with new materials would be a
good way to mitigate the risk of leakage or malfunction. I also think that it is important to redesign and
strengthen the landing gear to reduce vibrations in the nose wheel.
However, I think that the PHA and FMEA analyses you mentioned could go further. They should not
only address the system as a whole, but also identify and assess the risks associated with individual parts and
subsystems. This would help to ensure that all potential hazards are identified and mitigated.
In addition to the hazards you mentioned, I am also concerned about the following:
Foreign object damage (FOD) to the landing gear: FOD can cause significant damage to the landing
gear, which could lead to failure. It is important to inspect the landing gear regularly for FOD and to
take steps to prevent it.
Corrosion of the landing gear: Corrosion can weaken the landing gear and make it more susceptible to
failure. It is important to inspect the landing gear regularly for corrosion and to take steps to prevent it.

Improper maintenance of the landing gear: Improper maintenance can lead to a variety of problems with
the landing gear, including failure. It is important to have the landing gear serviced by qualified

Overall, I think the tri-wheel landing gear system is safe and reliable. However, it is important to be
aware of the hazards and to take steps to mitigate them. By redesigning the system, conducting thorough hazard
analyses, and performing regular maintenance, we can help to ensure the safety of all aircraft operations.
