CM2116 Quizzes Module 1 Quiz 1: Blueprint Standards ANSI stands for the American National Standards Institute ARCH D paper measures 24 x 36 inches. ISO stands for the International Standards Organization CAD stands for Computer Aided Design AIA stands for the American Institute of Architects ANSI A paper measures 8.5 x 11 inches Large firms may create their own standards for creating plans. ASME stands for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers The benefits of CAD include lower product development costs, faster processing, and greatly shortened design cycle. ARCH A paper measures 9 x 12 inches. Quiz 2: Blueprints & Construction Drawings Working drawings may use the page numbering system using the letter E for electrical pages. Working drawings may use the page numbering system using the letter S for structural pages. Working drawings may use the page numbering system using the letter A for architectural pages. Working drawings are also called project and construction drawings. Preliminary drawings go through many alterations. Presentation drawings are used for promotional purposes. Working drawings are technical in nature intended to furnish information necessary to erect a structure. Initial designs are presented in preliminary drawings. Subcontractors and suppliers typically rely on shop and assembly drawings. Presentation drawings are selling tools showing the project in its most attractive light. Quiz 3: Understanding Line Types Lines are the basis of all construction drawings. The alphabet of lines is the unique language of architects and engineers. Drawing with all lines of the same intensity or thickness makes a plan difficult to read. Some lines are made thick to stand out from the other lines on plans. Line type is a pattern of dashes, dots, or gaps used to make lines look different. Thin lines are not less important than thick ones. Line weight is the thickness or width of a line. Object lines are also known as visible lines. Drafting is an international graphic language. Dashed or hidden lines can serve more than one purpose in a set of plans.
CM2116 Quizzes Quiz 4: Understanding Dimensions Area dimensions measure a 2 dimensional area usually expressed as square feet or square meters. Linear dimensions measure a 1 dimensional length between two points typically expressed as feet or meters. The amount that a measurement can vary from the plans is known as the tolerance. Radial dimensions are used for measuring the radius of an arc or diameter of a circle. Volume dimensions measure a 3 dimensional volume usually expressed in cubic feet or cubic meters. Dimensions typically use metric or English units. The three scales typically used for construction plans are the architect’s scale, civil engineer’s scale, and metric scale. Nominal sizes are the rough sawn measurement of lumber while actual sizes are the finished sizes. A dimension is a numerical value expressed in appropriate units of measurement. Reference dimensions are for information purposes only and should not be used for manufacturing something. F Quiz 5: Types of Views Isometric drawings are used to show a three dimensional picture in one view. In practice, the minimum number of orthographic views necessary are provided on a set of plans. Perspective objects make distant objects appear smaller even though they have the same shape. Orthographic drawing is also known as Multiview drawing. A plan view is an orthographic view looking at an object from directly above. The United States and Canada use third angle orthographic projection for plans. The two important rules of orthographic drawing are view, placement, and alignment. The six primary orthographic views are the front, top, right, left, bottom, and back views. Orthographic views do not show any depth to an object. Common orthographic drawings on construction drawings are plans, elevations, and sections.

CM2116 Quizzes Module 3 Quiz 1: Layout of Construction Drawings A plan drawing represents a view of the project from above. A building permit will only be issued after the drawings are checked and approved by the various regulatory departments. Elevations are views that show the interior (or exterior) sides of a building. Sections offer a view through a part of the structure not found in other drawings. The most obvious difference between civil and architectural drawings is the use of the engineer’s scale. The cover sheet is important because it lists the drawings that comprise a ser of plans in the order they appear. General architectural plans consist of plan views, elevations, and sections. Mechanical drawings should contain appropriate notes, legends, symbols, and abbreviations. A site or plot plan is a drawing of a property that shows its size and configuration including the size and location of buildings and driveways. Structural drawings provide the reader with a view of structural members and how they will support and transmit loads to the ground. Quiz 2: The meaning of symbols Graphic symbols are often used on building plans to show window types. Sometimes a symbol for a particular component may have been specifically created by the architect or engineer who developed the drawing. The majority of architects and engineers use symbols adopted by the AIA. For various reasons, some of the symbols on a drawing may not be standard, and you will have to figure out what a symbol means by analyzing it and thinking about what it looks like. One must differentiate between industrial piping and residential/commercial piping or plumbing. In order for a system of symbols to work, each drawing within a set has its own unique number. Modified symbols are usually used because they are easier to draw and interpret. One of the main functions of graphic symbols on construction drawings is to reference other drawings within the set. Many materials are represented by one symbol in a plan view and a different symbol in elevation views. Electrical symbols are commonly used to simplify the work of the drafters and the workers reading the plans. Quiz 3: Understanding Schedules Properly done, schedule help our drawings from becoming too cluttered. A room finish schedule specifies that material finishes for walls, floors, and ceilings of interior spaces. Door schedules typically indicate the model or mark, quantity, size thickness, type, material, function, frame material, fire rating, and remarks. Schedules are essentially tables that list information about specific items in the drawings. Doors may be identified as to size, type, and style with code numbers placed next to each door symbol in the floor plan view. There are many types of HVAC schedules prepared by the mechanical consultants. Notes are a pivotal aspect of construction drawings as they often contain critical information regarding the project.
CM2116 Quizzes A schedule as applied to construction working drawings is an organized method of presenting a list of materials. Panel-board schedules are usually found on electrical drawings. A window schedule is similar to a door schedule in that it provides an organized presentation of the pertinent window characteristics. Quiz 10: General OST I What does OST stand for? On-screen takeoff Which of the following type of condition OST does not allow for? Volume OST does not allow for printing an image legend on each sheet corresponding to the various takeoff on the sheet. False In the free plan view mode, OST allows for adding sheets but does not allow for creating a takeoff. True OST does not allow for arranging takeoffs under different folders and sub-folders. False OST allows for changing the dimensions of the shape of the counter under the Count Condition. True OST allows for attaching CAD drawings in .dwg format as an image file to a bid. True OST does not aloe for custom scaling of the drawings, meaning the user has to select one of the predefined scales while setting the scale of the drawing in OST. False OST does not allow for duplicating a condition. False While creating an area takeoff, it is possible to add a slope to the takeoff in OST. True
CM2116 Quizzes Module 4 Quiz 1: Specifications The current MasterFormatTM specification format currently contains 50 divisions. The construction drawings contain as much information about a structure as can be presented graphically. Because of time and cost constraints, few companies would endeavor to write a completely new ser of specifications for each job. The MasterFormatTM standard is the most widely used for organizing specifications for commercial building projects. Open specifications give the contractor some choice of material selection. Building specification are written documents that go with the construction drawings. Drawings alone cannot define the qualitative issues of a project. Specifications prescribe quality of construction expected on a project. The MasterFormatTM standard was originally created in 1963 by the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) with 16 divisions. Closed specifications limit acceptable products to one or a few choices. Quiz 2: Building Codes Building codes govern the safety and health of building occupants. The main purpose of ADA legislation is to make American society more accessible to persons with disabilities. The International Code Council’s (ICC) mission is to unify all existing codes into one single set of comprehensive building codes. ADA compliant doors shall have a clear opening of 32 to 36 inches. Existing buildings are not normally required to conform to newer code requirements unless major renovations are performed. One confusing aspect of American codes is that there is not uniformity in codes between federal, state, county/parish, and municipality agencies. Most codes for fire and smoke are based on occupancy classifications. Building codes are essentially local laws enforced by each municipality or county/parish. It is estimated that roughly 75 percent of all codes deal with fire and life safety issues. An ADA ramp shall have a slope no greater than 1:12.
