Question 4.1 How can support workers contribute to emergency management plans? Support workers can contribute to emergency management plans by suggesting ways in which the school could improve their emergency plans. Question 4.2 Emergencies can occur at any time and can involve any number of staff and students. An emergency is an unexpected and dramatic event requiring an immediate reaction. How might a support worker respond to an emergency? a support worker if first on the scene should assess the exact nature of the emergency and then the likelihood of harm to predict the best course of action to be taken, an educator then may have the following responses to the emergency depending on the exact scenario. - activate alarms and emergency warning systems - managing the emergency eg using a fire extinguisher to prevent it spreading - calling 000 - moving people away from the emergency area or creating barricades to prevent people entering the area - provide first aid - managing or participating in safe evacuation for part or all of the building - trigger contingency plans - initiating search and rescue plans - potentially notifying parents. in most cases directions will be given to support worker by a teacher or a person with experience in emergency management. Question 4.3 Support workers must know what is required of them and which other personnel should be called upon to assist in different emergencies. They must follow the school’s emergency procedures. What will be addressed in these procedures? - how to identify emergencies - expected responses - how to warn others - how to report an emergency - when to activate emergency response plan - strategies to prevent escalation - equipment and resources that you should use - what action should be taken to protect staff and students until
emergency services arrive - how and when to use emergency management equipment Question 4.4 4.4.a How can work colleagues assist in an emergency? - check to ensure there is no further danger - help contain the emergency - prevent any escalations - shepherd people away from the area - help put up barriers - call 000 - notify families of the students - provide first aid if support worker isn't qualified or if there are multiple people requiring it - provide support, reassurance and assistance to those involved or affected 4.4.b What details might be shared when seeking assistance from emergency services? Answers can be provided in list or paragraph form, and must consider incident details. when seeking assistance from emergency services you should provide them with a brief succinct description of the emergency, the location (address), and relevant information, the number of affected individuals (adults and students), your name and contact number, the name of the person that emergency services should liaise with, details about what type of service is required (fire, police or ambulance) Question 4.5 What information should be included when recording the details of dangerous incidents or emergencies? - the names and details of those involved: students, teachers, staff and any other personal eg parents, visitors, contractors etc - date, time and location of the incident - details of the incident - cause of the incident - severity of the incident - the nature of any casualties or injuries sustained - details of action taken: eg first aid, barriers, evacuation ect - contact emergency services: who was called and why - response from emergency services: time and type of response - the name and contacts of witnesses - outcomes: injuries, treatment and ongoing issues relating to the incident
