Career Information Literacy Assignment (QEP) Remember: Once you complete the activity, upload it back to the Chalk and Wire website. 1. What is your major/program of study? My program of study is Mechanical Engineering Technology. 2. What are the technical/hard skills required for this field of study? How do coursework and certifications help to develop these necessary skills? A few hard skills required for this field are problem-solving, designing, data analysis, and project management. My coursework will help develop each skill. For example, there is a course on (CAD) Computer-aided design, which will give me the skill set for designing and creativity. Obtaining a certification in CAD further showcases my skill in designing. Even this course helps me hone my problem-solving skills, by getting me to navigate different websites to find my answers. Project management is developed through maintaining and completing required coursework. 3. Identify the soft skills that would be desirable for this field of study. Soft skills in my opinion are slightly subjective. However, I think having adaptability, communication, and teamwork skills would be desirable in the Mechanical Engineering field. 4. What is a topic related to this program of study, which interests you that may relate to your future career path? What do you already know about the topic? I am particularly interested in thermal dynamics. I have some slight experience calculating this effect on water systems and radiators used to dissipate heat. I think thermal dynamics is the study of how heat transfers through and away from different materials. 5. Choose a library database from the ECPI University Libraries website ( https://ecpi.libguides.com/az.php ) to research your topic. Which database did you choose? I chose the research library of science and technology.
6. What are three keywords that you could use as search terms for this topic? (If you have difficulty, review your previous answers for important words.) a. Thermal Dynamics b. Fluid Dynamics c. Thermal engineering 7. Search using one of the above keywords and identify below which one you chose: I chose “Thermal Dynamics” which is option “a” because this is what I am interested in. 8. List below the first three search results by article title (If your research produces less than three results explain that below in additional comments : a. Flexibility and thermal dynamic stability increase of dsDNA induced by Ru(dpy)2dppz2+ based on AFM and HRM technique b. The development of a dynamic, mechanistic, thermal balance model for Bos indicus and Bos taurus c. Protein dynamics, thermal stability, and free-energy landscapes: A molecular dynamic investigation Additional Comments: My research produced more than three results. 9. Did the keyword you selected to provide the appropriate number and type of results for your research topic? Explain why. Yes, my search provided me with the appropriate number of results but not the type of results. I am not interested in the thermal dynamic stability of our DNA. It seems this keyword is too broad. 10. Now, select a different keyword and repeat your search steps. Explain how the results of the second search were different? I chose my second keyword “fluid dynamics”. This resulted in journals associated with all types of fluid dynamics. This includes oceans, atmospheres, and even our spinal fluid. This is not quite what I had in mind. 11. Choose a method of limiting your search result via a filter (i.e., by resource type, year of publication). What method did you choose? I chose to use the advanced search option. I also added the term “closed system” and the term “cooling water system”. I selected the select all button under source type and deselected the book type.
12. List the first three search results after applying the above filter approach. How did your results change? a. Computational fluid dynamics analysis and extend adaptive hybrid functions model-based design optimization of an explosion-proof safety valve b. Liquid metal enabled combinatorial heat transfer science: toward unconventional extreme cooling c. Detailed Experimental Validation of the Thermal and Fluid Dynamic Behavior of Hermetic Reciprocating Compressors Additional Comments: My results were even more specific. I am starting to find journals that are more tailored to engineering and not human science. The journals also feature additional word terms I had added. 13. Based on your research results, choose one article you could use to write a research paper on your chosen topic. This should be the best resource from your results based on content, timeline, ss and publication . What about this source led you to select it over the others? I chose the journal “liquid metal enabled combinatorial heat transfer science: toward unconventional extreme cooling”. I chose this journal because it is recent as of 2018, and it is on a topic I am not familiar with. It talks about how using liquid metal provides an increase in the spectrum of uses because it does not freeze or evaporate like traditional fluid used in todays systems. This is exactly the type of topic that interests me. 14. Using the database citations tool, provide a sample APA-formatted reference entry for the above source. (example: Angeli, E., Wagner, J., Lawrick, E., Moore, K., Anderson, M., Soderlund, L., & Brizee, A. (2010, May 5). General format . Retrieved from http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ ) Xiao-Hu, Y., & Liu, J. (2018). Liquid metal enabled combinatorial heat transfer science: toward unconventional extreme cooling.
