Generative Artificial Intelligence
The following assignment counts toward class extra credit. You can complete two AI assignments at .5
points each for a maximum of 1 extra credit point to your average. You can choose to do one or two of
these in place of one or two of your active notes. Please note that the maximum amount of extra credit is
only 2 points, regardless of how many active notes and AI assignments you complete.
Input/Output
Grade I. Case Study Choose a case study from the list below. 1.
Maria had 3
rd
degree burn injuries covering more than 10% of her body and was extremely dehydrated. Following debridement of her burns and application of an antibiotic, an epidermal graft was applied over the burned areas, and she was placed on a fluid diet. Over the next three weeks, s
he lost nine pounds! Why or how did Maria lose so much weight in a relatively short amount of time?
II. Questions
Write 3-5 questions here that you need to know the answer to before answering the case study question.
1.
Was there a specific dietary plan or nutritional support provided to Maria during the recovery period?
2.
Were there any signs of infection or other medical complications that could have contributed to the weight loss?
3.
Details on Maria's fluid intake during the three weeks after the burn injury and epidermal graft application?
III. Answers
Using generative AI, find the answers to the questions above in part II. Write a detailed summary of the output here. If Maria had severe burn injuries covering more than 10% of her body, it's plausible that she experienced initial weight loss due to trauma and fluid shifts. The extent of this loss would depend on her baseline weight and overall health before the injury.
Potential complications, such as graft failure or adverse reactions to antibiotics, could impact Maria's overall health and contribute to weight loss.
If Maria did not receive appropriate dietary planning or nutritional support during the recovery period, it could contribute to weight loss.
IV. Prompt Engineering
Write your detailed prompt here.
Analyze the case of Maria, a patient who suffered 3rd degree burn injuries covering more than 10% of her body and presented with Professor

extreme dehydration. Following the debridement of her burns and the application of an antibiotic, an epidermal graft was administered over the affected areas, and she was placed on a fluid diet. Over the subsequent three weeks, Maria experienced a notable weight loss of nine pounds. In your response, thoroughly examine the potential factors contributing to Maria's significant weight loss within this relatively short timeframe. Consider her baseline weight, fluid intake, complications related to the graft or antibiotic application, the efficacy of the dietary plan, and any metabolic changes associated with the healing process. Provide a detailed analysis of these factors to elucidate the underlying reasons for Maria's weight loss during her recovery period. V. Summary
Write a detailed summary of generative AI’s answer here.
Maria's substantial weight loss of nine pounds over the course of three weeks following 3rd degree burn injuries covering more than 10% of her body can likely be attributed to a combination of factors.
Severe dehydration, a consequence of both the burn injuries and subsequent treatments, may have resulted in significant fluid shifts within her body, leading to a rapid reduction in water weight. Moreover, the heightened metabolic demands associated with the extensive healing process required for 3rd degree burns could contribute to increased energy expenditure, potentially causing a noticeable decline in overall body mass. The inflammatory response
triggered by severe burns may also play a role, elevating the basal metabolic rate and contributing to weight loss. Additionally, the nature of the injuries and the applied treatments may have led to the loss of protein and lean body mass. While not explicitly stated in
the case, potential complications related to graft application or antibiotic treatment could further impact Maria's nutritional status and metabolism, potentially influencing her weight during the recovery period. These interconnected factors collectively offer insights into the probable reasons behind Maria's significant weight loss within a relatively short timeframe.
VI. Survey
1.
In what ways did you find generative AI helpful to meet your goal?
Ai helped me answer my questions on the possible complications regarding Maria’s case study
2.
In what ways did you find generative AI NOT helpful to meet your
goal? Because the case study lacked many details, it was difficult for chat gpt to come to a conclusion. So together we made predictions on what could’ve been the case for Marias extreme wight loss.
3.
With academic integrity in mind, how else would you use Professor
Monica Hernandez Valencia

Semester: 1
generative AI for your academic work? To help clarify certain concepts if I am confused.
4.
What ethical concerns do you have regarding the use of AI for academic work? The human aspect of teaching, mentorship, and
personalized feedback may be compromised, impacting the quality of the educational experience.
5.
Reflect on your experience using AI for this assignment. How did
it help your creativity and critical thinking? It helped me come to conclusions that hadn’t even crossed my mind.
6.
Reflect on your experience using AI for this assignment. Where did you rely too much on the AI output? To generate an answer to my questions and the case study itself. I don’t think I could’ve come to such a detailed response without the help from Ai. 7.
Should assignments like this become a regular part of the curriculum? Why or why not? I think It should, solely to keep students up to date with time and technology and have them learn to use the systems to their advantage. 8.
How can the instructor improve this assignment for the future? I
think it was a pretty interesting assignment, it really helped me think critically and also with the help of Ai I was able to come to more detailed conclusions.
Case Studies
2.
You administer an anesthetic to a 32-year-old healthy male patient, James, who is extremely anxious about a surgical procedure. You explain to him, “Certain neurons have to depolarize and undergo an action potential to maintain consciousness, but some anesthetics can produce temporary unconsciousness. The anesthetic binds to and opens a potassium channel, which increases the “leak” current of potassium. However, it doesn’t affect the voltage-gated potassium channels.” Clearly confused, James is still worried of suddenly waking up while the surgeons are operating on him. If the anesthesia opens more potassium leak channels, why is your patient less likely to produce action potential and suddenly wake up?
3.
Kevin is a 28-year-old male with excellent health history. He is undergoing surgery to remove an inflamed appendix (appendicitis). Shortly after being given general anesthesia, his heart rate jumps to an astonishingly fast 120bpm (beats per minute) and his core temperature rises quickly from the normal 98.6° F to 101.8° F. His exhaled CO
2 (carbon dioxide) levels have also begun to rise. Kevin has malignant hyperthermia! Why is his body temperature rising? Dantrolene is the only drug available to treat malignant hyperthermia. It works by inhibiting and closing the Ca
2+ channels of the terminal cisterns. What effect would Dantrolene have on Kevin’s body temperature?
4.
You are in the emergency room one evening when a patient is brought in with a knee injury sustained while playing soccer. The patient says he was in the middle of a game that morning when he noticed a loud popping sound followed by pain. His mother says another player kicked him on the lateral side of the injured knee. His knee is swelling, he cannot fully extend or straighten the knee and feels unstable when he tries to walk. The night nursing team asks for Professor

You conduct a cystoscopy to examine the urinary tract of a patient with a chronic burning sensation upon uresis (urination). To effectively view the lining with your cystoscope, you instruct the patient to drink 1 liter (4 cups) of water without urinating 2 hours before the exam. The human bladder can only hold up to 24 ounces (3 cups) of urine. You insert the cystoscope into the urinary tract to view the appearance of the cells that line the inside of the bladder. What was the point of having the patient drink and hold so much water in their bladder?

You are an engineer working on a project and your prototype has failed prematurely. You question whether or not a key component of the prototype was manufactured with the correct material. There are two way to check for the material properties. The first way is to have a material certification done to confirm the exact material composition. This will take some time. The second method to confirm the material properties is to make an ASTM test sample and test for the material properties. This tensile test was completed on a test sample with an initial diameter of .501” and an initial length of 2”. The Load-Deflection data for this tensile test is below. Use this data to answer the first set of questions on the Final Exam in eLearning. A. Determine the Ultimate Tensile Strength B. Determine the 0.2% Offset Yield Strength C. Determine the value of the Proportional Limit D. Determine the Modulus of Elasticity E. Determine the Strain at Yield F. Calculate %…

Please double check before rejecting this question. If it needs to be rejected, please explain why as I cannot see how this is a breach of the honor code.
This is a questions from the previous year's exam at my university in Engineering Science. I have submitted a solution given to us for study purposes as proof that I will not be graded on this assessment.
In this solution, the formula (2gh)1/2 is used to find the solution, but I am on familliar with Bernoulli's Principle (P=1/2pv^2+pgh), and I was not able to find a solution using this. My solution incurred an error when I found that I had two unkown variables left that I could not break down in any meaningful way. (Velocity being the desired variable, Pressure being the problematic variable). Pressure = Force x Area, but I don't know enough about the dimensions of the tank or tap to be able to understand this.
Thank you for your help.
