HOME INSPECTION
1. Choose a home (apartment, condo) to inspect for safety hazards. It can be your own
home, but ensure there is enough to inspect to make this assignment a worthwhile
learning experience for you. Include the following in your inspection:
Approximate age of the home: 37 years old
Style of the home (two-story, one floor condo, etc.): 2 Bedroom low rise Condo
located in Ajax, Ontario
Number of persons living in the home: Ages of the persons living in the home: 2
seniors
aged 75 female and 79 years old male. 0 adult ( from 16-64 years old )
and 0 child ( from infant to 15 years old )
Number of working fire extinguishers present in the home:
None, there's no
present fire extinguisher in the unit at the time of the visit, But the building has 3
units of fire extinguisher on each floor, east, middle and west wing.
Number of smoke detectors present in the home: 2 smoke detector is present
one within the kitchen and one in the master's bedroom
Number of working carbon monoxide detectors present in the home: 1 carbon
monoxide is present during the visit. Located on the top door of the master's
bedroom
Electrical, gas, or hot water (registers) heating source: Electrical heating source,
as it shows on the heating unit and superintendent mentions it has a meter per
resident.
Gas or electric stoves and ovens: electric gas stove is present in the location,
microwave oven is also present.
First aid kit at home: Yes but no update. Some materials are expired and some
need to be refilled.
2. Complete a thorough inspection of each room of the home, including basement,
laundry room, and garage, if applicable, noting the following:
a)
physical hazards
: house is clean and tidy, just noticed wires are not properly
kept can cause trapped, or electric short circuits. Doors are free to open
and close.
b)
thermal hazards
: air purifiers are present in the living room and can
overheat if left open or unattended. Tendency the residents forget to turn
it off because of the age as mentioned. Industrial coffee brewer is also
present and has a hot plate for coffee pot.

c)
mechanical hazards
: cracked coffee pot is still in use. Possibly hazardous
and health safety issues. Vacuum cleaner power cord needs to be
replaced; the cord is only covered with electrical tape and might cause fire
if overheated.
d)
bio-hazardous hazards
: cleaning bottles are un label. Blood fluid is present
in the toilet sit.
Record your findings on the chart included with this assignment.
Note:
There is a column to also record what safety hazards have been addressed already.

For example:
consider in the bathroom(s): are there anti-slip mats; is there open garbage;
where are hair dryers or hot irons stored; where are meds stored; where are razors stored;
where is the safe storage area for cleaning supplies.
Note which age groups would be particularly impacted by the hazards you uncover in the
home and why they are at risk. For instance, any objects lying on the floor or open outlets
would be hazardous for approximately ages 6 months to 3 years because they are learning
about the world around them.
To the chart,
add your suggestions on what improvements should be made
for
each
hazard
in
each room
that you identify. There will be one mark for each completed hazard per
associated section.

You are an engineer working on a project and your prototype has failed prematurely. You question whether or not a key component of the prototype was manufactured with the correct material. There are two way to check for the material properties. The first way is to have a material certification done to confirm the exact material composition. This will take some time. The second method to confirm the material properties is to make an ASTM test sample and test for the material properties. This tensile test was completed on a test sample with an initial diameter of .501” and an initial length of 2”. The Load-Deflection data for this tensile test is below. Use this data to answer the first set of questions on the Final Exam in eLearning. A. Determine the Ultimate Tensile Strength B. Determine the 0.2% Offset Yield Strength C. Determine the value of the Proportional Limit D. Determine the Modulus of Elasticity E. Determine the Strain at Yield F. Calculate %…

You are assigned as the head of the engineering team to work on selecting the right-sized blower that will go on your new line of hybrid vehicles. The fan circulates the warm air on the inside of the windshield to stop condensation of water vapor and allow for maximum visibility during wintertime (see images). You have been provided with some info. and are asked to pick from the bottom table, the right model number(s) that will satisfy the requirement. Your car is equipped with a fan blower setting that allow you to choose between speeds 0, 1,2 and 3. Variation of the convection heat transfer coefficient is dependent upon multiple factors, including the size and the blower configuration. You can only use the following parameters:

Question 2
You are a biomedical engineer working for a small orthopaedic firm that fabricates rectangular shaped fracture
fixation plates from titanium alloy (model = "Ti Fix-It") materials. A recent clinical report documents some problems with the plates
implanted into fractured limbs. Specifically, some plates have become permanently bent while patients are in rehab and doing partial
weight bearing activities.
Your boss asks you to review the technical report that was generated by the previous test engineer (whose job you now have!) and used to
verify the design. The brief report states the following... "Ti Fix-It plates were manufactured from Ti-6Al-4V (grade 5) and machined into
solid 150 mm long beams with a 4 mm thick and 15 mm wide cross section. Each Ti Fix-It plate was loaded in equilibrium in a 4-point bending
test (set-up configuration is provided in drawing below), with an applied load of 1000N. The maximum stress in this set-up was less than the
yield stress for the…

Steam at T1 = 320 °C flows in a cast iron pipe (k= 80 W/m. °C) whose inner and outer diameters are
5 cm = 0.05 m and D₂ = 5.5 cm = 0.055 m, respectively. The pipe is covered with 3-cm-thick glass wool
insulation with k = 0.05 W/m. °C. Heat is lost to surroundings at T2 = 5 °C by natural convection and
radiation, with a combined heat transfer coefficient of h₂ = 18 W/m². °C. Taking the heat transfer coefficient
inside the pipe to be h₁ = 60 W/m². °C, determine the temperature drops across the pipe and the insulation.
The determination is based on a unit length of the pipe (L = 1 m).
Assumptions
1. Heat transfer is one-dimensional since there is no indication of any change with time.
2.
Heat transfer is one-dimensional since there is thermal symmetry about the centreline and no
variation in the axial direction.
3. Thermal conductivities are constant.
4. The thermal contact resistant at the interface is…
