Main Post-1 According to Corey & Corey (2006) as a group leader you bring personal qualities, values, and experiences to the clients in the group. To ensure growth in the group one is leading, reflection and growth in one's own life is necessary (Corey & Corey, 2006). I truly enjoy connect to and inspiring others. I am often told that people feel very comfortable talking to me. I know that I possess the ability to be courageous and purposeful in empowering and challenging others. A group must possess the ability to create meaning in the lives of group members (Corey & Corey, 2006). I also have been told that I am a empathetic and genuine in relating to others. Corey & Corey (2006) describe courage, willingness to model, presence, and sincere interests as essential traits in a group leader. Additionally, there are areas that I may need to improve in to lead a group effectively and efficiently. For example, I am not as open as I know that I can be to others around me both personally and professionally. Out of habit, I tend to keep my personal life off the table when talking with others not directly in my personal group. Being a group leader requires being able to be open and express one's self to give others a sense of who you are as a person (Corey & Corey, 2006). By opening myself up to others appropriately and ethically I can provide a door for others to do the same inside the group. Another challenge for me would be terminating the work with individuals and groups. Group leaders must possess the ability to end individual participation and groups as necessary. This is an area I hope to gain a better understanding and experience in to strengthen my skills. The skills needed to bring closure to involve discussing with members how to make group experience applicable to their life, preparing clients for future challenges, follow-up, providing additional information on therapy, and being available for individuals at termination (Corey & Corey, 2006). Group therapy is a method of therapy that I value because I have seen it work with many methods of issues. I work with sex offenders and victims of sexual abuse and I have seen group therapy help in this area. For example, it is one component to treatment with adolescent sex offenders and those that struggle with issues from sexual abuse. These areas are sensitive and difficult to develop which is all the more reason counselors leading groups must focus on developing the abilities to advance in the skills of building rapport with the group. According to Shechtman & Toren (2009) research shows group leaders who are warm, supportive, and genuine impact the group in a positive manner and build stronger rapport than those who come across distant and cold.
I think it is important to also take up post evaluations after the group ends to determine if the group members felt as though their needs were met and what areas they were not met.
