Topic 1 DQ 1 How can teachers facilitate a learning environment that balances foundational knowledge with rigor while nurturing early learners to have a positive attitude towards math? To deliver quality mathematic education to children, educators should first enhance and or create a child’s natural interests in mathematics. The learning environment and teachers should cooperate to build children’s mathematical experiences and knowledge. When employing instructional strategies, teachers should base their practices and content taught on the children’s cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social-emotional development (“Early Childhood Mathematics: Promoting Good Beginnings,” 2010). Students positive attitude toward math can be developed through its integration in other activities and concepts. Children should be provided with additional time if needed, materials, and other forms of support to engage with and explore mathematical ideas and concepts (“Early Childhood Mathematics: Promoting Good Beginnings,” 2010). To create a positive attitude towards mathematics and learning, there should be an understanding of children’s development and learning. Some ideas that can be included and/or embedded into the classroom environment to strengthen students’ attitude toward math can include incorporating music and movement into the math routine. Additionally, providing math books, puzzles, and games, along with numbers and buttons can encourage mathematical curiosity as well (AZ Early Childhood Career and Professional Development Network, 2023). Encouraging children to play mathematically with money, rules, timers, and other math materials can enhance their attitudes toward math too (AZ Early Childhood Career and Professional Development Network, 2023). Finally, allowing students to create their own math art will encourage mathematical thinking. Children can me replicas of clocks, necklaces with number patterns, calendars, and counting games.
