Developed by you as the instructor Assignment 1B
There are plenty of benefits to knowing your students. It is imperative to student success and buy in. I am the varsity boys’ basketball coach at the high school I work at. One reason we are successful is because of the relationships I have with my players. They know that I care about them and ultimately want the best for them, this is the same approach in the classroom. So, when it comes to helping students learn and succeed in the classroom this same approach can be utilized. Student and Teacher relationships are imperative as you are a role model to these kids, whether they admit it or not, they look at the educator as someone who is successful and how they can carry themselves as a young adult. This all connects because now you have taken
the time to understand who your students are and what they enjoy, they know that you as an
educator do care about them and they value your opinion more. So how can we utilize this information? Well, in our next lesson I can now relate it too “Johnny” because “Johnny” is struggling in my math class but “Johnny” really enjoys football. Maybe we can do a fantasy football warm up one day so it entertains our athletes in the classroom and still achieves the standards for that day. They can do the math to figure out how many fantasy points Aaron Rodgers scored if he threw 3 touchdowns and had 306 passing yards and we do that with every quarterback that past week. If I didn’t know that “Johnny” and some other students enjoyed football, I would be teaching this the old-fashion way and having them memorize the material rather then them doing it with something they enjoy and still achieving the same learning outcome. So with understanding the importance and how it can help lets look how we can do this on a day to day basis. The Teaching Cycle is about planning, teaching & assessing, reflecting, and applying what we learned from reflection. So we plan out our lesson based on the learning outcomes but on what our students enjoy to the best of our ability. Next, we will go and teach the lesson and assess our students to see if they are retaining the information. This could be a simple check for understanding or a formal assessment at a later time. Afterwards, we will reflect on how that lesson went. Maybe it did not go as well as I thought it was going too and I need to make some smaller adjustments for the next time I use this lesson. After this whole process is done, I would apply it to this lesson but most importantly I would apply it to future lessons too. Simply because, we can always do better as an instructor.
