SNM1 Task 2: Evaluates Learning Technologies
Learning Goal
: Student will be able to fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental math strategies by scoring an 85% a fact fluency quiz. 99math
: 99math is a learning platform in which teachers can assign specific skills for students to practice in a variety of ways. Students can be assigned practice as homework, individual practice, and there is an option to practice as a whole group with Live Mode. 99math provides immediate feedback for both teachers and students. A.
The Live Mode on 99math is a great way to support the achievement of fact fluency because of the live mode element. Math fact fluency refers to the ability to use strategies efficiently to answer an equation accurately with automaticity. On 99math, teachers can assign a number of timed rounds in which students will practice a skill in real-time. This gives the students the opportunity to use the mental strategies that they have been taught to practice working out the math facts fluently. With students being able to practice this skill with a time limit, allows students the opportunity to build their stamina which will increase their ability to work out equations using mental math, therefore, working to improve their chances of achieving the learning goal.
B.
An element of 99math that could facilitate deep learning is the ability for students to practice the learning goal without the stress of feeling ‘tested’. Studies have shown, due to factors such as test anxiety, that timed tests have had negative impacts on student achievement (Boaler, 2012). The

live mode element of 99math is created to feel as if the students are playing a game in which they are in competition to beat each other’s times, but also, accuracy is reported as well as recognition of those that improved with each level. This takes the anxiety of being timed away from being timed and their focus turns toward using those mental strategies they have been taught to ‘win the game’ or improve their scores in the next level. C.
99math also offers teachers the opportunity to assign individual practice for their students as well. This element is a great way to accommodate individual learning differences. The individual practice element offers teachers the ability to assign specific facts (ex. adding 2, subtracting 4, etc.) and higher-level and lower-level versions of the skill. This allows the teachers to individualize the learning based on the needs of each student. The individual practice feature also offers students the option to either type answers or use their mouse to click the numbers on the screen. This takes into account students that may be more comfortable using the keypad or those that learn better by seeing the numbers on the screen.
D.
99math integrates well with both learning management systems Clever and Google Classroom. Teachers that use Clever or Google Classroom, can import student accounts straight onto the site, and students can automatically sign-on to 99math from those accounts.

Boom Learning
: Boom Learning, also known as BoomCards, is an online learning platform that allows teachers to assign students a set of digital task cards that they can complete as many times as they want. Boom Learning provides teachers and students with feedback as to how many times they have completed the task cards along with their best, worst, and overall average scores.
A.
Being able to create specific decks of task cards to be completed by the students could support the achievement of the learning goal. The teacher can create cards that are specifically geared toward the learning goal. This ensures that the students are practicing the precise skills that they need to master the ability to add and subtract within 20 fluently. B.
Because the teacher can create specific decks of task cards, they can create cards that allow students to show or explain the mental strategy that they used when finding the sums and differences of the equations. This will require the students to think critically about the strategies they use as opposed to simply utilizing rote memorization of the facts.
C.
The same element that supports the achievement of the learning goal and facilitates deep learning, is also an element that allows for the accommodation of individual learning differences. While it can be time consuming, it is possible for the teacher to create multiple boom card decks with varying levels of difficulty as well as different ways to provide their answers such as clicking the write answer or typing the answer.

Students could be assigned the deck that best supports their learning differences.
D.
Boom Learning also integrates with both the Clever and Google Classroom learning management systems. Teachers can import their class rosters, streamlining the sign-in process for all students. All students have to do is click on the app from the learning management system, and they will be taken directly to the Boom Learning site, or even directly to the specific boom card deck that the teacher has assigned. MagicSchool.ai
: Magic School AI is a relatively new learning technology that provides lots of options for teachers to utilize as well as offering access to students as well. Teachers can launch a ‘room’ for their classes where they can choose tools from the site that they want to be available for their students to have access to. A.
One element that could support the achievement of the learning goal is the Math Review tool. This tool uses AI to generate questions that have students practice using mental math strategies to add and subtract within 20. The more customized practice that students can get using this tool, the better they will get at using those strategies and being able to work through the facts fluently. Because the Math Review tool is able to provide the student with immediate feedback, this will also help them reach that learning goal quicker and more efficiently. B.
There is also a tool on Magic School AI called Step by Step. This tool provides students with step-by-step directions on how to apply the

different mental math strategies when adding and subtracting within 20. This element of Magic School is an amazing way to facilitate a deep learning of the goal. In most cases, the teacher can provide support in small group settings, but providing one-on-one support isn’t as easy with the class sizes only getting bigger. Having a tool that can provide one-on-
one demonstration of a skill is priceless. This will help the students understand the process of the various strategies in a deeper way and reinforce fluency. C.
The Quiz Me feature is an element that could accommodate individual learning differences. Students are able to use this tool to quiz themselves on the skill they are trying to master. Because each student has an individual account, the feedback and instruction that the AI can give is truly an individualized experience. This interactive feature allows for self-
assessment and identifies areas they need further practice and improvement in.
D.
While the free version of MagicSchool.ai doesn’t integrate with any learning management system, there is a paid version option that does integrate with Google Classroom. Recommendation: 99math
After my evaluations, I would recommend 99math for this specific learning goal. I feel that this learning tool is a perfect fit for the goal of mastering math

facts within 20 using mental strategies. Because it can be shown that a math fact has been mastered if a student can produce an answer within 3 seconds (Kling & Bay-Williams, 2015), this learning tool just fits seamlessly with that idea. From the individual practice that allows for students to have the chance to practice the facts and use the strategies that they are being taught that leads to live mode that allows students to show how many equations they can work out in a set time. Timed tests seem to be a thing of the past after years of research proving the negative effects they have on students. 99math is a way to take out the stress of those antiquated timed-tests and provide teachers with the data they need to see which students are fluent while the students are having fun and hopefully growing a love for math.
