Discussion Thread: Exploring Standards Grade: 50/50 (363 Words)
My curriculum area and grade level for this week's discussion thread are Mathematics (6th grade). I picked this level since it is my backup plan in case there are no elementary positions available.
I noticed that all the Standards start with a tiny goal summary for each one. (Ex. 6.MG.1 The student will identify the characteristics of circles and solve problems, including those in context, involving circumference
and area.) Measurement and geometry were the things that struck out to me the most. The relationship between the standard and Chapter 2 of the textbook is that "teachers write objectives for themselves to help
guide the growth of their teaching skills." (Price & Nelson, 2019), with that being explained, the teacher goes by the standard given to help guide them and their students, which leads to the growth in their teaching skills. Following the same standard as above, I discovered that the Curriculum
Framework goes into more detail and depth than the standards. The Curriculum Framework sets out the understandings that students should have about the standards as well as the information they should
have after finishing the standard and the aim. The Curriculum Framework even provides instructors with guidance on how to put the standard into practice. In our textbook it states that, "Multiple learnings
in one objective, on the other hand, means that one objective includes two different skills in the same content area or possibly, skills from two different content areas."(Price & Nelson, 2019). Here’s an example
“Students will compare and order fractions and decimals correctly” involves two different skills. (2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning).
These resources would help a teacher with their planning, because they
would have to plan out the multiple objectives and figure which objectives can go together. With this planning technique this would guide teachers and show their growth in their teaching skills over time, as they become more comfortable and familiar when it comes to planning. References:
