SPE 501 Module 2 Case Study A new fifth grade girl, who is 10 years, 6 months old, has moved into your district this year. She has been in school for about 6 weeks and the classroom teacher has observed and reported to you the following: Has trouble following directions Difficulty with reading decoding and comprehension Slightly below average in math but seems to understand mathematical functions and principles Is able to write a small paragraph with about 10 simple sentences Complies with social rules during class Seems to be developing appropriate friendships and the other children seem to like her Her folder from the previous school just arrived and has been passed on to you to interpret the following scores from the Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement-II which had been administered the previous spring. The student was being evaluated for special education but this was not completed due to the family move. For the chart below  fill in the column with an estimated percentile rank . (Use the chart in the PowerPoint to help you get close and the stand ppt on standard scores and percentiles). Then please  write a narrative that describes the student’s academic functioning . The focus of the narrative should answer the question: “How does the student compare to typically achieving peers?” Write the narrative in a way that a parent could understand and use statistical language.  Conclude the narrative with some recommendations  to help the student progress. o Girl A has obtained a score of 75 on the Letter Word Recognition KTEA-II test. This places her at an 8 th percentile showing that 92% of peers her age performed higher than her. o Recommendations: Girl A would benefit from practicing letter recognition and phonemic awareness. This can be done with the use of letter flash cards. Show her a card with the lowercase and have her practice “a says /a/.” She should also practice putting these sounds together to blend into a word. This will help strengthen her decoding skills. o Reading Comprehension o Girl A has obtained a score of 64 on the Reading Comprehension KTEA-II test. This places her at an 3 rd percentile showing that 97% of peers her age performed higher than her. o Recommendations: Girl A can practice reading a text and use a graphic organizer to retell the story through words and pictures on text appropriate for her level. o Math Concepts o Girl A has obtained a score of 103 on the Math Concepts KTEA-II test. This places her at an 55 th percentile showing that 45% of peers her age performed higher than her. o Recommendations: Girl A can practice addition, subtraction, division and multiplication skills to real life examples. o Math Computations o Girl A has obtained a score of 112 on the Letter Word Recognition KTEA-II test. This places her at an 12 th percentile showing that 88% of peers her age performed higher than her. o Recommendations: Girl A can practice addition, subtraction, division and multiplication using logical thinking. Having to decide which method is best to solve a math problem. o Spelling o Girl A has obtained a score of 63 on the Spelling KTEA-II test. This places her at an 1 th percentile showing that 99% of peers her age performed higher than her. o Practice rainbow writing words using different colorings and say each letter aloud. Continue to practice those letter sounds to help with segmenting sounds of a word to sound out. o Listening Comprehension o Girl A has obtained a score of 82 on the Listening Comprehension KTEA-II test. This places her at a 6 th percentile showing that 94% of peers her age performed higher than her.
o Recommendations: Girl A can listen to a story on Raz Kids and practice retelling using the 5 finger retell strategy. Play games at home like telephone that require her to listen closely and retell. o Oral Expression o Girl A has obtained a score of 90 on the Letter Word Recognition KTEA-II test. This places her at a 30 th percentile showing that 70% of peers her age performed higher than her. o Recommendations: Listen to a text appropriate to her reading level and have her answer comprehension questions aloud.
