December 9,2023 Final Reflection Paper Advice I give to future teacher candidates about taking EDEL 4373 is to keep up with the assignment due dates. This course uses Tophat and unfortunately Tophat does not send reminders whenever an assignment is due. Adding to that, if you forget to submit an assignment you will not be able to submit it late even if you tried to submit it a couple minutes late. In order to submit a late assignment on blackboard you will have to email your instructor asking her if she can open up the submission box again. You will have one day after the due date to submit a late assignment with 5% penalty deduction. I would suggest printing out a copy of the assignment checklist which includes due dates and video conference dates. This way you can mark out and write notes to remind you about upcoming assignments and video conferences. Most importantly, always check your email. The instructor will have updates on due dates or reminding you of what is coming up. Another advice I give to future teacher candidates about taking EDEL 4373 is to have a flexible schedule. This course requires collaboration work with partners. You need to find a time where you and your partners can get together and work on D & Es that require recording of you and your partners teaching a 5 - 8 minute long math lesson. My experience working on D & Es at first was a little hard for me. The preparation I took for teaching these mini lessons required me to take notes on how I would be introducing and explaining my thinking process through each step. I would always have to remind myself about the grade level we chose so I can make sure my word choices for explaining are appropriate for that grade level. Advice for future teacher candidates is to take notes from the modules on Tophat. There is enough information in each
December 9,2023 Final Reflection Paper module to help with your D & Es that also includes examples that explain step by step. While working on the D & Es, it personally took me a while to understand the content of each module. In this course I learned about representing and solving word problems using a set model and representing multiplying decimals using the area model. Growing up I was never taught these methods. I was mainly taught the standard algorithm or drawing pictures for visuals. My partners took the time to explain it to me until I understood it. Having the opportunity for collaborative work to work on assignments like the D & E and SWAs was really helpful. I would have been confused if I had to do these assignments independently. Furthermore, when completing the pdf format D & E my partners and I shared a document where we each shared our ideas for coming up with connections made with other mathematical concepts, student misconceptions and how to fix those misconceptions. We discussed by typing on the document asking each other questions like, “ What type of mathematical models did we use?” or “ What could be a student misconception that is connected to our word problem?” Since we each live far away and only had the opportunity to get together on Wednesdays we found an effective way to communicate and complete our assignments. I would suggest future teacher candidates if their partners live far away to find an effective way such as sharing a document where each partner types their ideas or either facetime or have a zoom call where y'all can discuss each other's ideas. Throughout this course, EDEL 4373, my instructor provided sufficient instruction in an organized way. On Tophat each module was labeled and organized in order. Each module
December 9,2023 Final Reflection Paper provided the objectives, examples, activities and directions as well as videos too. Advice I give to future instructors teaching EDEL 4373 is to provide adequate instruction in an organized way that makes it easy for students to find assignments. Also, my instructor provided constructive feedback. She replied back on assignments that we turned in, comments on submissions and on our videos on Swivl. Advice I give to future instructors teaching EDEL 4373 is to provide helpful feedback to their students on their assignments like D & Es and SWAs. As well as on student’s video submissions teaching their mini math lessons for each module.
