Differentiated Instruction
Differentiated instruction is important for educators to use in their classrooms in order to allow all students to excel and grow in their learning in a way that works for them. There are several ways to differentiate instruction, using resources that are available to use in the classroom. Some examples of these are collaborative learning, digital resources, flexible learning
environments, scaffolding and compacting material. In my unit concept of graphing and equations, the students will work in groups based on ability, students will be in groups based on differing ability based on prior work the students have completed. These groups will offer peer-
to-peer collaboration between students and allow students to verbally explain how they understand the material, and help each other to work through the problems they are tasked with. Allowing these small groups to work together creates a differentiated and welcoming environment inside the classroom. The unit concept lessons I will use include collaborative learning groups and will promote engaging conversation and productive struggle for students to dive deeper in to the mathematical concepts. Within the groups, the students will be able to work through problems at their own pace and help students who may be struggling. By allowing the students to take on responsibility of their learning, they will become more connected and interested in the lesson they are working on. The students will all be creating graphs and working through how to plot points and create a line. When students are able to work with their hands, they are more likely to retain information. Therefore by allowing children to all be creating the graphs, but talking it through in their small groups, they are more likely to stay engaged and retain the information. When working through the problems, students will be able to share how the concepts may be interpreted into real world situations. A great way for students to retain information is to relate
the material to the students as “students will comprehend the information more if the information
is connected to their own real-world experiences” (Martin, 2020).
Other strategies that I will implement into my intervention section would be enhanced cultural competence and comprehensive support. By increasing the staff’s knowledge of different
cultures and understanding students’ culture, abilities, resilience and efforts is an important aspect of teaching (NEA, 2002). Students come from various backgrounds, which can have an effect on the type of learners they are. It does not matter is they are visual, verbal, physical, logical, social, etc. type of learners, educators have to be able to provide them with tools and opportunities to succeed (Learning Styles, 2019). Educators are able to generate student lesson plans based on the type of learners they have in their class. Educators should review the data they
have on their students and reflect on what they observe to understand what each student needs. When creating assessments, I recommend that teachers give different versions to different students depending on their learning ability. With UbD, we need to know what each student will be expected to show in order to prove mastery. Once we know that, we can set up the examinations where students can get to that desired result based on the tools they need to succeed. In its simplest form, if I have an ELL student, the assessment needs to be translated into
Spanish if needed. Another example would be for a student who struggles with organizing his work, so the test is set up with a guide for him to keep organized. There are many considerations when a teacher is trying to implement differentiated instruction and strategies into their lesson. One of the most important considerations would be how to adapt learning for students in the classroom that have IEPs or 504s, because by law, those
students must be given their specialized accommodations and differentiated instruction. Moran explains another consideration, saying, “the understanding of learning styles and tiering within

the classroom can help the process of improving student engagement and learning” (2016). Every student has a different learning styles as well as diverse backgrounds and home lives. It is imperative that students take steps to get to know their students on a deeper level and understand what they need to be successful. Questioning students on a deeper level should be asked to help understand the level of engagement that a student is capable of giving. It is also important to consider grouping as a way to help with the differentiated instruction. Students can be paired with students to complete assignments and bounce ideas off each other. The environment of the classroom is extremely important to how the class will run and the success of the students. An inviting environment builds trust between the teacher and between the students themselves. The set up of the classroom can help differentiated instruction as students could utilize flexible seating to help them be successful. Tiering helps the educator move students towards grade-level standards as the students are ready. Tiered activities would be
given to small groups based on their assessment scores or pre-tests for new material. This allows teachers to differentiate “complex activities that all students are using the same materials on, but are altered due to readiness levels” (Sullivan, 2019). For math concepts, many times the students have trouble with the first step, therefore one of the tiering activities would give the teacher the ability to provide that first step to help the students to work through the problem. There may be students who have trouble drawing a neat graph, so a teacher could provide a coordinate plane template for those students. All of these considerations and strategies are important for the unit to be successful. In order for the material to be taught, the environment needs to be set up for success. There are so many different aspects of education and it is important to include them in lesson planning so that all students have the opportunity to learn and be successful.
Technology
Technology should be included in all educational environments at this point and should be implemented as much as possible. The use of technology opens up opportunities for differentiated instruction and adaptive services. “Technology has expanded access to education, improved opportunities for communication and collaboration, and changed the role of teachers and learners” (Purdue University, 2019). There are many assistive technology tools that will be used throughout the unit plan. The main one will be graphing calculators, specifically the TI-85. Students will be able to graph, find points, and make connections with the use of the calculator. For visually impaired students, talking calculators can allow them to keep up with the pace of the class. Another assistive technology tool will be the CPM algebra tiles. We have a virtual version as well as a real life manipulative that students can use when building patterns and developing linear equations. With these, the students have a hands on experience and will have a better chance to retain the information. Students also have access to Desmos, an online graphing website. They are able to manipulate graphs, coordinate points, and other parts of a line to start to understand the relationships at a deeper level. Adaptive technology is also something that needs to be considered in the unit plans. Raised line paper can also be used for students who cannot properly draw the coordinate plane. For students who work at a slower rate, recording the lesson and posting it for later reference is something that would be beneficial to those students. Using closed captioning on those videos would be helpful to certain students. As the unit progresses, it will be important to observe what tools students could benefit from and implement when needed.
