I can incorporate augmented and virtual reality technology into my unit on graphs and equations in many different ways. Using these technologies can help my students to have a deeper understanding and connection to the standards we are learning. It can also help students to research different concepts
more deeply and allow them to be presented information in multiple ways.
As with anything when it comes to teaching, there are challenges when implemented. One of the challenges that I have personally crossed is our school’s strict adherence to the curriculum. Especially within the last 2 years with parents worried about curriculum content, we have told multiple times to stick only to what our curriculum offers. Now, for the last few years we have been using CPM with incorporates some technology itself but nothing like AR or VR. This coming year we will be piloting a new
curriculum, illustrative mathematics, which has so many opportunities to include such technology and I am hoping that this opens the door for us. Using videos of lessons or just simple things as Edpuzzles has been quite a challenge for us, as we have to have upper admin “okay” such activities. Now, in math it was a little easier, as there are not any controversial issues that would be a problem, but the extra step has deterred many of us teachers from deviating from the curriculum for such activities. This also brings up the challenge of affordability. Some of the VR and AR programs that allow teachers to create are expensive and may not be in the budget for many schools
Another challenge would be for some of the unique learners, there may be confusion or information overload (Akcayir, 2017). Depending on the complexity of the tasks, there are students who may get frustrated or not be able to keep up with the others in class. If there is too much visually, for example, the ADHD student may get distracted and be unable to focus on the specific task. With the amount of technology already being used, the different platforms and the complex tasks coupled with the lack of essential skills that students need to navigate could be a challenge for students. I do think there are ways to play ahead, such as previewing the VR or AR with the student prior to class, that can help alleviate these issues. References
