Unit Concept
The first step to create my unit plan would be to state what concept the lesson plan will be covering. I will be focusing on a unit consisting of Graphs and Equations from an 8
th
grade math course using the backward design process.
Desired Goal: Stage 1
My stage one would consist of how math comprehension is built for middle school student. There will be core standards that will be established and will directly relate to the
topic. For this unit, the desired goal is to have students work together within their team and transfer their learning of specific skills to their individual work. . The essential question of this unit will be: how do I encourage students to work together with their peers, support productive struggle, and transfer their learning to their independent work. Their independent work would allow the students to use the Understanding By Design concept in their own work, which would require them to “explain, interpret, apply, and shift perspective” (2012).
When completing stages 2 and 3, I would want all of the students engaged in the direct instruction introduction of the material. The students should be able to identify parts of the problem that are prior knowledge and successfully compute those steps. They should also be able
to identify different pieces of the equation with their vocabulary knowledge. Other things that could help would be to have a class discussion about what we know, what vocabulary is involved
and what is new. For stage 2, I will analyze the assessments, quizzes, etc. and find wehre the standard appears in those activities and how the test or quiz is asking the questions about those concepts. By doing this, I will be able to find what skills the students will need to learn to be successful in mastering that standard. I will also go through the independent activities that the book has and
analyze how they are asking the student to perform as well. For stage three I would plan the activities that would align with the standards. I would look at what the students will struggle with
and be sure to incorporate interventions for those skills. The lesson plans will be developed to help all students be able to learn. For example, guided groups will need specific materials to help
them abstractly and concretely understand the topic. When graphing a line, the students are going
to need to understand what the slope and y-intercept represent, so making a toolkit page for them
to reference will be an option. Considerations
Teachers need to be able to figure out how to engage all students and give every student an opportunity to learn and succeed (Morin, 2009). By designing the lesson plans to provide for flexibility and differentiated resources, students can learn the material presented to them. The UDL process is set up to help students of all learning abilities and differences (Meyer, 2014). It is important that the setup and execution of the plan be conveyed to those who will be implementing it in a useful manner. Providing them with scaffolding that can be used and showing ways to teach the different learning styles is important when implementing such concepts. Another consideration would be to present the information in more than one format, according to Meyer (2014). This could include video clips of math concepts or color-coded pictures that connect the different pieces of the graph and equation. These visual learning aids can help engage students and assist them in being successful.
