Correlation and regression – World Health Organization
Use the “Global Health WHO Data” dataset.
1.
Create a scatterplot for hospital beds per 100,000 versus life expectancy using technology. Perform a linear regression test on the data.
Insert the scatterplot here:
a.
Report the correlation coefficient: .423
b.
Identify the Pearson correlation coefficient critical values (use n = 47, df = 45, and alpha = 0.05): .288
c.
Write the equation for the linear relationship: ŷ = .112x + 73.921
d.
Is there a linear correlation between the number of hospital beds and the life expectancy? I failed to reject H
0,
so there is not sufficient evidence to support the claim a linear correlation exists between hospital beds and life expectancy.
e.
Is it positive or negative? Does this make sense to you? Explain
. Positive because the line goes up and yes, it makes sense to me. 2.
Create a scatterplot for average income versus suicide rates using technology. Perform a linear regression test on the data.
Insert the scatterplot here:
a.
Report the correlation coefficient: .546
b.
Identify the Pearson correlation coefficient critical values (use n = 47, df = 45, and alpha = 0.05): .288
c.
Write the equation for the linear relationship: ŷ = .0001x + 6.8112
d.

3.
Read “Preventing Suicide in the Republic of Korea” on the following page. Write a paragraph or two about the how the story shows progress for the specified sustainable development goal. a.
In 2014, the importance of limiting access to means of suicide as an effective way of reducing suicide was highlighted in their first ever WHO report on suicide prevention. Suicide mortality in the Republic of Korea has been high compared to other high-income countries. Suicides by pesticides accounted for about 1/5
th
of all suicides in the Republic of Korea from 2006-2010. Tens of thousands of lives could be saved every year should effective regulation of pesticides be enforced worldwide. This could be enforced by approaching pesticide bands and other policies, community interventions, improved healthcare, and training activities. This approach can model other countries like the Republic of Korea reduce suicide deaths. b.
What happened in the country? There were almost 800,000 suicide death
c.
What other countries have a high suicide rate that may benefit from some kind of intervention? Belgium
and Japan also have high suicide rates
