MATH STANDARDS Selection Karla Rosas Professor Melissa Cowden ECED 243 February 12, 2024
ECED243 MATH STANDARDS Selection NAME: Karla Rosas What age group are you selecting standards for? (1 point) Older Preschool 4-5year olds First standard selected (2 points) : M1:1: Demonstrate strong sense of counting. Describe one developmentally appropriate activity that addresses this standard (3 points): Children will gather white pop poms and use the spray bottles to count how many sprays the pom pom reads. They will take turns in using the various colors of sprayers that have a set of number placed on them. Why did you select this activity? (2 points) I selected this activity because it allows the children to have a visual of the numbers while having a hand on activities to go along with it. It also allows them to work on taking turns and gain fine motor skills. Why is the activity age-appropriate? (2 points) This activity is age appropriate because it allows children to engage in the activity to be able to build on their prior knowledge of numbers and counting. Why is the activity effective in addressing/teaching the standard? (4 points) This activity is effective in teaching the lesson because it allows the children to have a hands-on activity learn how to count, and it encourages them to continue counting when using multiple spray bottles. It can accommodate for different levels of developmentally appropriate, making it not too hard or too easy to accomplish the activity. Second standard selected (2 points) : M2.2: Demonstrate awareness of patterning Describe one developmentally appropriate activity that addresses this standard (3 points): Goldfish Pattern or Bear Counters. This activity can involve patterns with colorful goldfish and or different colored bear counters. It allows the child to be engaged in a fun way to continue a pattern that is already placed in front of them. Why did you select this activity? (2 points) I chose this activity because it allows them to have a hand on sensory activity while being ablet to develop an understanding of patterns. It allows the child to be able to gain a sense of accomplishment by snacking on the goldfish when they are done understanding or trying to understand the topic. Why is the activity age-appropriate? (2 points) Because it allows them to actively participate in the learning process. The activity is designed to be open-ended, providing flexibility for children to experiment with different types of patterns. It ensures that the activity is neither too easy nor too difficult, allowing children to progress at their own pace.
Why is the activity effective in addressing/teaching the standard? (4 points) Because it does so by addressing the development of patterning skills but also caters to the diverse needs and interests of older preschoolers. Third standard selected (2 points) : M5.1: Understand concept of time Describe one developmentally appropriate activity that addresses this standard (3 points): An activity you can do with children in this age group is create a visual daily routine with your children. It allows them to have a visual representation of what their classroom does daily, hourly so that the children are able to have a concept of time of what goes next or what you did before. Why did you select this activity? (2 points) I selected this activity because it allows the children to be more involved in the daily aspect of their routine and be able to understand what they are looking at and learning at the same time. Why is the activity age-appropriate? (2 points) I believe this activity is age-appropriate for this age group because they are becoming more aware of daily routines, and the visual cues help reinforce their comprehension of time-related concepts. Why is the activity effective in addressing/teaching the standard? (4 points) This activity addresses the standard by tying the concept of time to familiar and routine activities in a children's daily routine. The hands-on aspect of placing the corresponding images on the chart actively involves children in sequencing their daily routines, enhancing their understanding of earlier and later.
