Josiah Lazar CST 1103 Professor Shippey 3-17-21 Word Count: 320 M2 Reflection The first thing that stood out to me during the reading was the Fertile Crescent. I have never heard of the Fertile Crescent before, and I thought it was very interesting to learn about. The Fertile Crescent is a crescent shaped area of land located in the Middle East. “The area curves from the Persian Gulf westward toward Syria and down through Palestine into Egypt” (Arterbury, Bellinger, Dodson, 25). The reason that I found this interesting was because it was shaped like a crescent moon, and the topography is ideal for growing crops and sustaining life. Another thing I learned for the first time while reading this chapter is the meaning of Mesopotamia. It means “in the midst of rivers” or “between the rivers,” and is located between the Tigris and Euphrates River (Arterbury, Bellinger, Dodson, 25). I had heard it several times before but knowing the meaning gives you clues about its location even if you never spotted it on a map.
The last thing that was new information to me is the earliest known form of writing. In the book, we learn that the earliest known writing was invented by Sumerians, and it is called cuneiform. I found this very interesting I never really thought of writing being invented. I guess I just thought it was always there because in my lifetime it has always been there. Something in the readings I had already learned about, and the last thing that will be talked about in this reflection was the Epic of Gilgamesh. I learned about the Epic of Gilgamesh about two or three years ago in a history class my mom taught using, “The Mystery of History.” The Epic of Gilgamesh is an “epic poem” that came from Mesopotamia. In this poem the character, Gilgamesh, goes on an adventure with his friend seeking out immortality. In the end he learns that death is a part of life.
