Noelia Toscano-Arteaga Journal 3 Oct 12, 2023 Journal 3 - Oct. 12, 2023 My third visit was on October 12, 2023. I went from 1 pm to 2:30 pm. When I got to the school, Tyler was subbing for Joanna. There was a field trip today to UAF for the third, fourth, and fifth graders. Therefore, she was subbing for the first and second graders. The teacher, Joanna, who usually is in the classroom, was one of the teachers on the field trip. There were only about five students in the classroom when I got there. Tyler was working with a couple of students on their “expectations” and I was working with students on Prodigy. Expectations are tasks that the students need to complete during a certain time period. The tasks range in subjects from reading to art. The current period is October 9th to October 27th. I wonder how the expectations are set, for instance, why are those assignments chosen for the students? One expectation I saw that puzzled me was a watercolor circle painting that was listed for art. I wondered why that was the assignment chosen when it seemed to not coordinate with the other expectations that seemed to be based on the topic of marine animals. Prodigy is a math and reading adventure game where students need to solve or answer problems correctly to get energy that then progresses them in the game. Student A showed me how to play the game and was doing the reading portion. A is a first grader so many of his reading questions consisted of identifying parts of speech in a sentence. Such as “A beautiful cat sits on a tree,” what are the nouns? A’s answer would be “cat, tree.” The students were working on Prodigy because they had completed a certain amount of expectations. I wonder if other schools use Prodigy as well or if it is specific to Chinook. After a while, the students had gotten back from their field trip. Everyone transitioned
from the field trip and subs to their main teachers and reading groups. Instead of starting with Tyler’s first and youngest reading group, we started with her middle group. I wonder if the first group did reading today or not but I forgot to ask. However, we were short on time so the students read through their story and only did one page of book work. On a normal day the students would read their story, take a reading and comprehension quiz, do an activity related to the book, then begin book work and do about 3 pages. During book work they worked on letter sounds and the helper “e.” The students take turns reading sight words, challenge words, and matching stories to pictures. We were only able to get through one reading group today. I left after the reading group when the students started to clean up so that I could beat the after school traffic.
