Using this data from San Antonio, TX, we will explore whether there is a rela5onship between neighborhood income and access to organic items at local grocery stores. Explanatory (independent) variable: the variable that predicts, explains, or influences a trend in the response variable. This variable is plo4ed on the X axis. Response (dependent) variable: the measured outcome. Responds to trends in the explanatory variable. This variable is plo4ed on the y axis. 1) In this example, which variable is the explanatory variable? Why? - House hold income average and zip code, X means eXplanatory 2) In this example, which variable is the response variable? Why? - Response is the organic vegetables offered which is your y variable in this cases. *Dataset compiled by student Linda Saucedo, Fall 2019 Describing sca@erplots

3) Describe what it means for a correla5on to be posiEve
. Describe what it means for a correla5on to be negaEve
. Posi5ve- as the x values increase, the y values also increase Nega5ve- as the x value increases the y value decreases 4) Sketch a line of best fit on each of the plots above. Then, describe the difference between strong and weak
correla5ons in rela5onship to where a line of best fit is located among the data points. LSRL- a strait line that puts about half of your data above It and half below it Strong- data is close to the LSRL Weak- data is far from LSRL 5) Put it all together: Describe the rela5onship between average household income in a zip code and the number of organic vegetables offered at the local grocery store. - the relaEonship between average household income and the number of organic vegetables offered at local stores appear to be linear, posiEve, and moderately strong. There do not appear to be any outliers. Context: organic veggies and average income DirecEon- posiEve Outliers- none Material adapted by HS Lee from the Skew The Script curriculum (skewthescript.org) C – Context D – DirecEon (posiEve/negaEve) O – Outliers F – Form (linear/non-linear) S – Strength (strong/moderate/weak)
