Ocean Bay Middle School is located in the unincorporated community of Carolina Forest. Found just North of U.S. 501 between Conway and Myrtle Beach, the city of Carolina Forest is home to more than 35,00 residents. The Carolina Forest area offers access to shopping, financial and medical resources, and much more. Carolina Forest is one of Myrtle Beach’s fastest
growing communities. In the neighborhood, the Carolina Forest is home to many public schools, which range from grades k-12. Carolina Forest provides quality, family-friendly suburban communities, and businesses, as well as part of one of the state's top school districts.
Ocean Bay Middle School is ranked amongst the higher rated schools in the state. This school received an excellent rating based on their school report card in 2018-2019. Ocean Bay Middle School consists of 629 students in grades sixth through eighth. The 2018- 2019 school year data received a score of sixty two out of one hundred labeling it as an excellent school. 35.1% of students exceeded the English/Language Arts standard, 33.2% met the standard, 22.8%
approached the standard, and 8.7% did not meet the standard. Amongst the district and state, these percentages out scored those. When looking at the Mathematics standards, 39.8%exceeded,
27.2% met, 23.2% approached, and 9.6% did not meet. Similar to the English/Language Arts standards, Ocean Bay Middle School outperformed the district and state percentages. As a larger school, it is important that students are being prepared for success. On this portion of the schools report card, Ocean Bay once again scored in the excellent category with a 7.2 out of 10 rating. 70.4% of students met or exceeded the Science standard put in place. 92.7% met or exceeded the History standard. These percentages out ranked the district and state once
again. These percentages are showing that students are being given equal and fair opportunity to grow academically throughout the grade levels at Ocean Bay Middle School. When looking at the progression of English Language Learners, Ocean Bay Middle School fell just below the District percent. Ocean Bay had 62.1% of English Language Learners progressing, whereas the district had 64.2%. Of the 29 students participating in this study, only 18 students met the standard. With this, Ocean Bay Middle School received a Good scoring in this sub area with a 6.2 out of 10 score. With these ratings, educators can find a wide variety of students within the classroom. Using blended lesson plans would be efficient in most of the classroom. This allows for group work, individual work, and one on one time with the teacher. Ocean Bay’s dynamic population makes accomodating the needs of students more attainable. Being amongst the higher scoring schools in the district, Ocean Bay can thrive for greatness and provide a good environment for pupils to grow and succeed. This classroom is made up of twenty-five students. There are ten male students and fifteen female students. Seven students' ethnicities align as Black or African American, fourteen students carry the White or Caucasian ethnicity, three students are of Latino ethnicity, and one student is of Asian ethnicity. The classroom is predominately white and female. In terms of academic achievement, there are fifteen students who are on grade level, five students who are above grade level, and five students who are below grade level. The majority of the class speaks fluent English, while only two students are categorized as English Language Learners. Surveys and Assessments will be conducted to determine learning styles and to see if these students bring
prior knowledge that could be built upon in lessons to come.
In the classroom, there are students with special abilities such as Gifted and Talented students or GT. There are three students in the class who are classified as GT, all are proficient readers who are reading at a tenth-grade level. The three students who are identified as GT are testing above grade level as far as academic proficiency. The three students are tested as proficient readers. To ensure gifted students are challenged, they will receive a standard test with
no additional time than what is allotted unless special permission. There is a student in the class who has ADHD and has to take medication to control impulsive behavior. However, this does not stop him from achieving well in the class. The student is on grade level in his academic proficiency. The classroom also has a population of students with IEPs. Students with IEPs will receive an altered copy of assignments and tests that use more direct questions than the general assessments. To ensure students with IEPs are able to finish their work, they will be allowed an additional 15 minutes to complete work. There are two Latino students in the class who to them, English was a second language. It is both students' first few years in the country and learning English. To accommodate for the students who are not proficient in English, assignments and readings will need to be translated into Spanish copies to enable the students to be able to participate. If IPads are available then google translate will be downloaded to allow teachers to give directions. Additional time on assignments will be allowed to ensure students have adequate
time to finish work.
