2 Creative Culture- Pixar You would be living under a rock if you said you didn’t know or hear of Pixar. Especially Toy Story, some of the best creativity comes from the animation studio. Thorough the process of creating Toy Story there were learning curves that helped Pixar and their values grow and be phenomenal. One of the values we learned about is the value of people. (Catmull, & Wallace, 2014) state that “getting the right people and the right chemistry is more important than the right idea”. It is very apparent that at Pixar valuing the people is a huge focus. Toy Story 2 was a wake up call for Pixar that the needs of the movie should not outweigh the needs of Pixar’s employees and their people. At Pixar the employees take a lot of pride in their work. They value the people instead of the process. “We should trust in the people”. (Catmull, & Wallace, 2014). The process is a tool a type of framework. Employees and people at Pixar take ownership and responsibility for their work, and goals. Pixar holds a lot of value that passionate leaders get a lot of their power from enabling other to do their work and by telling them to do their work. They believe in team collaborations, the belief is that if you great people, then the ideas. At Pixar another big value is making candor real. Candor is forthrightness or frankness. “Candor” with truth-telling and a lack of reserve support psychological safety’s tenets. (Catmull, & Wallace, 2014). This a value at Pixar because the belief is that when candor is part of a workplace people don’t feel silenced. They share ideas and opinions, criticism. And this is how the Braintrust came into development. It is a feedback mechanism that is formed from a small group that meets every few months to assess the movie process. And this is how they provide candid feedback to the director. This a great value, relies on honest candid, constructive feedback on the project not the person. They believe in suggestions not prescriptions. Thinking about Toy
3 Story and how these values made this animated film extremely successful. It would have been an easy task to create a movie where the toys communicated and had a boring storyline. The creative process relies very much on feedback that is truly honest. If those people sat around and did not speak candidly. Toy Story would have not been as successful. Pixar has taken some of these values and truly created an environment where creativity can flourish. Taking these values and implementing them into a company can increase the brands equity. The value of people is huge I would highly recommend this value, people want to be heard, they want to be part of the process they don’t always want to be told what to do. We learned from Pixar that “trusting the process” is just a tool. Utilizing this value, teaches people ownership and responsibility. When people feel supported and valued, they perform better. Honesty can be difficult for many people especially when it comes to creating, executing a business or product. I would recommend braintrust for a few reasons. One the main reasons I would recommend this value is because it is a very effective way to thrive and grow. To learn from others. Great ideas come from many collaborations. This is a value with many benefits, one being it provides people an okay way to weigh in with their thoughts. Candor is essential for the creative process. Peer review can help with raising quality for any product development. Creating a candor environment isn’t about creating an environment that takes credit for an idea or development of something. It doesn’t have any authority. Untimely the recommendation to use candor is that it helps product design. But just with anything we do we must trust in the Lord to guide us with the right decisions and path. Just as this week’s bibles reflection states that “God has embedded within each and one of us the skills abilities to create, it is our responsibility to find what those unique abilities are and not let them go to waste”.
