RUNNING HEAD: CHRISTIAN MARKETING 1 Christian Marketing Liberty University Bus. 433-B01
Christian Marketing 2 Introduction The Christian perspective of marketing may not be a completely positive perspective. People usually tend to think of marketing as a part of a scheme to encourage people to buy things they do not necessarily need. Marketing techniques establish desires in people that they normally did not have and some Christians would take a stand to say that this is wrong. However true this may be, Christians should be wary about where they work and what they believe in before signing the paperwork for their choice of career path. Everyone who commits to a company or organization should be fully confident in their ability to perform the tasks that align with the company’s mission statement and visions. Marketing is a necessary field for any business willing to survive in a competitive market; Christians looking to go into the field should pray for peace and be willing to work hard at whatever task they are put. Why Marketing is Important In a business, it is important to understand that a marketing strategy is vital for success. The Journal of Historical Research in Marketing states, “Using an appropriate marketing strategy is a critical element for business success. Choosing an effective strategy requires knowledge of what various alternative marketing strategies exist and understanding how they work under varying environmental and organizational conditions.” (Shaw, 2012, Para. 1). An organization depends on marketing, whether marketing be composed of word-of-mouth advertising or direct advertisement such as magazines and commercials. The Issue of Marketing Many would argue that marketing is an evil that Christians should avoid. They have the mentality that Christians should not involve themselves with such deceit of persuasion to buy unnecessary products or services. In an article titled Can a Christian Work in the Marketing
Christian Marketing 3 Field?, the author explains, “It seems to me that the marketing industry has become so powerful and pervasive AND deceitful that a Christian would have to compromise his or her principles of honesty to work there.” (Olson, 2011, Para. 2). Ultimately, Olson’s article encouraged Christians not to involve themselves with marketing, but his article seemed a little farfetched. Colossians 3:23 states, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,” (Holy Bible, ESV). A Christian in the marketing field should be careful and never cross the boundaries of promoting a worldly product. If one feels the want to pursue marketing, they should have full confidence and belief in the product or service they are promoting. A Christian should feel they have the ability to promote the Lord due to their hard work, and not feel guilty for promoting self or bringing glory to their success. As a Christian in the Marketing field, it is important to give all glory to God and work hard at promoting a business to the best of one’s ability. Conclusion The marketing field is not for the faint of heart. It takes a lot of patience and an understanding of peace while promoting secular products and services. Almost every business has some secular aspects. Whether a person is working at McDonald’s or promoting products at a Fortune 500 company, belief in the product and organization is needed. No matter what field a person works in all glory should be given to God and hard work ethic should be given. Everything done without faith is sin, so faith must be put into practice in the marketing field. It is not impossible to work in the marketing field as a Christian; it just takes a lot of reminders to understand who is in control and whom the work should please. 2 Timothy 2:15, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” (Holy Bible, ESV).
