AMS Assessment 2B: Research Proposal
Suggested format and guidelines
Executive Summary
Briefly summarise background information, objectives, research methods, expected output, and
potential contributions of the proposed research.
1.0 Background
Collect background information and discuss your understanding of the problem faced by HAL.
Below are some questions which could help initiate the thought process on this topic.
What is the importance of consuming vegetable?
Are Australiansconsuming vegetable/broccoli at all?
What about the vegetable/broccoli consumption among children?
Use secondary data to support whether consumption is growing or declining.
Is this a new problem or the problem existed from long before?
How serious is this problem?
Use reliable sources including newspapers, magazines, journal articles and reports. When using
internet-based sources, do refer to the lecture notes and textbook about evaluating web pages.
2.0 Research problem and objectives
Being a consultant to HAL and based on the background information, you will then need to define
the research problem. For example: (
What factors affect the consumption of vegetable/broccoli
among children in Australia?)
2.1
Research Objectives
Refer to the textbook regarding research objectives and how these are related to the
research problem.Refer also to the Learning Guide page 10.
2.2
Research Scope
Describe the scope within which the proposed research will be conducted in terms of
respondents (e.g. parents, not teachers), geographical location (e.g. Greater Sydney), age of
children, focus on vegetables and specifically Broccoli, time period and other relevant
aspects.
2.3Justification
Briefly justify the importance of conducting the proposed research.Review previous studies
to find out how serious this problem is and how important it is for HAL to address this
problem.
3.0 Literature Review
-Review previous published articles and research on this topic (3-5 relevant journal articles).
-Refer to consumer behaviour textbook and references.
-Identify relevant concepts/constructs/variables (independent and dependent)
-Define and operationalise relevant concepts/constructs/variables
-Develop a framework for your study and formulate relevant hypotheses
3.1Conceptual Framework
Conceptual framework may be presented in the form of a diagram showing the dependent
and independent variables and their relationships, as below:
This framework suggeststhe following hypotheses:
H1:
Mothers’ perception of cost of vegetable/broccoli affect their children’s consumption
of vegetable/broccoli
H2:
Mothers’ perception of health/nutrition benefits of vegetables/broccoli affects
theirchildren’s consumption of vegetables
H3
Other factors …?
3.2
Hypotheses
- At the end of this section you may develop your hypotheses and propose
to test them. This is not mandatory but doing so will result in higher marks.
Note that each hypothesis should be supported by a theoretical explanation/justification and
results of previous findings, if any.
4.0 Proposed Research Methods
4.1 Qualitative Research
– Are you proposing that qualitative research be conducted? Why
or why not? What type of qualitative research do you propose? Describe/discuss proposed
methods.
4.2 Quantitative Research
– Are you proposing that quantitative research be undertaken?
Why or why not? What research methods do you plan to undertake?
-As the chapter on Experiments is scheduled for the final week of the term, you may prefer
to pursue the Descriptive Research (Survey) option only.
Mother’s perception of
nutrition/health
benefits of vegetables
Children’s consumption of
vegetables
(DV)
Mother’s perception
of cost of vegetables
Other factors
….
-Is there a need to use both qualitative and quantitative research? Why?
4.3
Measurement and Scaling
-What variables will you measure and how are you going to measure them?
-Develop a questionnaire for data collection – attach a copy in the Appendix.
-The questionnaire should make correct/effective use of the four types of scales ie. nominal,
ordinal, interval and ratio
- Note that you may use existing scales that have previously been used and tested (e.g.
Marketing Scales Handbook)
4.4
Sampling
Describe your proposed sampling design, sample size and sample selection
procedure; and briefly justify
4.5 Data collection
Describe how you will administer your questionnaire (e.g. online, personal interview,
telephone) and justify.
4.6 Data Analysis
Describe and briefly explain the type(s) of statistical analysis that you propose to
undertake. Note that statistical analysis is partly dictated by the type of scales used.
5.0 Ethical Considerations
Describe ethical considerations or issues, if any and how you plan to address them.
6.0 Summary
-Briefly summarise your proposal, expected output and potential contributions of the study
-How will your research contribute towards understanding and resolving the problem faced
by HAL?
