2-1 Discussion: Critique of SWOT
Briefly review
SWOT Analysis: It's Time for a Product Recall
, which
offers a critique of SWOT strategies. Then, carefully read
SWOT Does Not Need to Be Recalled: It Needs to Be Enhanced
, which highlights proper ways to undergo SWOT analyses. In your own words, describe some of the key strengths and weaknesses of SWOT for evaluating and improving operations at a company. What best practices will you seek to utilize for your own SWOT analysis? What pitfalls will be most important to avoid, and how do you plan to avoid them?
Like many of the tools we have learned about at SNHU, the SWOT analysis has positives and negatives. It is up to the project manager to develop this tool to determine the best fit for the business (or project) they are working on. A SWOT analysis can be beneficial in identifying company weaknesses and deterring threats to the business. It also allows the company to develop goals and implement strategies that will allow for the achievement of those goals. As discussed above, however, SWOT
analysis does have its limitations. A fundamental SWOT analysis doesn’t provide solutions to the identified weaknesses and threats. There is also no priority assigned to
the issues after they are recognized. SWOT analysis can also generate an abundance of information without a way of determining what is helpful or best.
One of the biggest pitfalls I can see in completing the SWOT analysis is clarity. SWOT does not provide a reliable way to determine which information is practical and pertinent. To avoid this weakness in the tool, I intend to elaborate on the analysis, providing reliable proof that the data provided is valuable. Another common mistake when creating a SWOT analysis is being too optimistic or unrealistic. This pitfall will not
be difficult to mitigate with this project as I have no personal ties to the company that I
have chosen. I have never worked for them and will more than likely not be looking to be employed by them, and therefore, I will be able to be entirely subjective in my thinking.
Paying close attention to subjective and credible sources of my SWOT analysis will allow me to provide a detailed look into REI and identify possible internal and external issues that someone with an emotional or financial stake in the company may overlook.

How to respond to this in 100 words?
The SWOT matrix is an extension of the SWOT analysis as it relates to the alternative characteristics relevant to the internal strengths and weakness within the organization. The SWOT matrix strengths and weaknesses are created and listed on the left side vertically, while the opportunity and threats is across the top. The significance of the SWOT matrix is not confusing the external opportunities with the possible course of actions. "The SW/OT matrix is a systematic means of developing strategic alternatives available to the organization, but it also requires brainstorming and creative skills as well” (Parnell, 2017, p. 229). The SWOT matrix is a valuable tool that managers can use while leveraging strengths and weaknesses within an organization. There are also four classifications that can appear from the SWOT matrix which drives multiple strengths or weaknesses, in conjunction with opportunities or threats. However, emphasis should be geared…

build on the concepts of development and succession planning by identifying potential development gaps and creating an outline for a development program. Begin by clarifying the role of “development” and its importance in overall organizational strategy. Then:
Identify skill/development gaps, including the process used to identify them
Outline a development program, including how it will be delivered, audience, projected costs, etc.
Determine how the effectiveness of the program, as well as Return on Investment (ROI) would be measured.
As you develop these aspects of the project, keep in mind the impact of development on the culture of the organization.
