What is the difference between leadership and management? What role does headship play? Should all nurses be considered leaders? Explain your rationale using nursing theory. Leadership is the ability to influence others. Leadership focuses on growth, inspiring others to be the best versions of themselves. Management is the overseeing of processes. Lush described it best by saying leadership is the what and why, management is the how (2019). The distinction between the two are blurred due to organizational structures. Headship titles often utilize the term “manager,” but have leadership responsibilities. The executive team is referred to as “leadership,” but are far removed from the clinical staff. Leadership is not a title that can be objectified. It is subjective because anyone can be a leader to another if he/she has influence. This happens at every level of the organization, not just within the executive group. There are various types of leadership styles that may be more impactful to some people versus others. I tend to be more attracted to innovative leaders (2023). I value early adaption of change, learning new perspectives, and challenging institutionalized processes. Therefore, I look for these qualities in people I chose as leaders. It is important to be self- aware as a leader to know your strengths and how to adapt them to situations. References Lush, M. (2019). The Leadership Versus Management Debate: What’s the Difference? NZ Business + Management , 33 (4), M20–M23.
