What factors affect resilience? There are many influencing factors that affect organizational resilience each varying depending on the department of labor, but which all affect one another as a company whole. I believe these begin with internal and external focused environments. Indeed Editorial Team lists these external factors as politics, economy, demographic, technology, global and ethical factors. (9 External Environment Factors That Affect Business, 2022) External being items that the company cannot control and must use the internal factors to adapt. Internal factors being company specific such as mission and objectives, organizational structure, culture and management style, HR, Labor Unions, and money/resources. (Sherman, 2022) What do organizations need to do better? What are the obstacles to doing so? Organizations need to have a more open mind and adapt as needed to survive this changing environment. The article “The Quest for Resilience” states that strategic resilience is more than acting upon a onetime crisis. Organizations need to be ready to adjust to unforeseen circumstances and there needs to be a flexibility in adjusting their business strategies by addressing four main challenges: cognitive, strategic, political, and ideological. (Hamel & Valikangas, 2003). What can we learn from high-reliability organizations? We can learn that successful HRO’s share similarities including overcoming difficulties with high-risk. “High-reliability organizations have the following characteristics in common: Hyper complexity, Tight coupling with interdependence across units and levels, Extreme hierarchical differentiation, Large numbers of decision makers in complex communication networks, Redundancy in control and information systems, A degree of accountability that does not exist in most organizations, Frequent and immediate feedback about decisions, Compressed time factors with major activities are measured in seconds and more than one critical outcome that must happen simultaneously.” (Jacobson, G. 2022) These are the organizations that are successful and remain standing today.
