2. Which reporting method described in this chapter do you think can make the
biggest impact on safety? Defend your answer.
I would say that FOQA can make the biggest impact on safety. FOQA is able to
identify common mistakes in flight trends, and correct them before major
accidents are encountered. Also, it continues to look at the corrective actions
after being implemented to ensure effectiveness, and if not it can be revised.
Having so much flight data can be very beneficial, and can analyze common
trends within an airline, whether positive or negative. Another benefit is that
FOQA is relatively new, so as time progresses it should be getting better and
better.
3. How does FOQA contribute to creating a proactive safety environment?
FOQA analyzes a large amount of flight parameters and can view trends and
common themes among an airline. Using this data, changes can be made and
monitored after being implemented to determine the effectiveness. Also, since
there are so many flights a day, the data is very diverse and most flights are not
exactly the same. Each day brings new challenges, and FOQA is able to record
this data and use it later in the future.
6. If your pilot colleagues were hesitant to allow an observer's collecting data for
LOSA to ride their jumpseat on a flight, how would you convince them otherwise?
Well there are a lot of factors that go into this, some pilots may not be
comfortable with this type of presence, but that would be pretty rare if they have
made it to the airline level. I would try to talk to them and explain that they are
only here to improve safety, which is the most important aspect of the job. This is
a touchy subject because I do not want to anger the captain or PIC during the
preflight, and possibly get them unfocused before the flight.
