Emotional and Social Intelligence The simple definition of emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize and manage one’s own feelings and emotions as well as those of others (Landry, 2019). There are five core components of emotional intelligence which include self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, empathy and motivation. Self-awareness is when you are not only aware of your own strengths and shortcomings, but also being able to identify triggers or situations that influence your emotions and how that affects those around you (Landry, 2019). Self-regulation is the ability to control your emotions and self-soothe or talk yourself off the theoretical ledge. Individuals that can read other people, exercise active listening and communicate well are demonstrating social awareness. Empathy is the ability to identify another’s feelings and feel what they are feeling. Motivation is when an individual can push themselves and others to be the best version of themselves and to achieve the goals they set. Social intelligence is the ability to build successful relationships, read and manage others, as well as yourself (Yalcinyigit & Aktas, 2023). Individuals demonstrate social intelligence through good communication skills, intuitiveness, attunement, active listening and conflict management skills. Emotional and Social Intelligence are essential traits for a leader to possess (Samoilă & Samoilă, 2022). Leaders with these traits can identify key issues and opportunities within their organization. They can adapt and navigate change well, which is important in all aspects of life. Social intelligence indicates that a leader can interact well in different social situations and social groups. This is important for a leader as this enables them to build authentic and strong relationships, which results in inspiring and motivating others. Many organizations look for leaders that possess both emotional and social intelligence traits as they have proven to be more effective leaders (Samoilă & Samoilă, 2022). Page 2 of 4
