Does the adoption of manufacturing process innovations create incentives for the adoption of environmentally conscious manufacturing strategies? If yes, explain why, and if no, explain why not. What is the impact of environmentally friendly manufacturing on the sustainability of the organization? Is environmentally friendly manufacturing necessary or just a fad? The Lean and Green article supports my opinion that the adoption of manufacturing process innovations creates incentives for the adoption of environmentally conscious manufacturing strategies. It is more than reasonable to correlate innovative and creative thinking in manufacturing processes to cost reduction, waste mitigation, overall reduced risk and (whether intentional or as a byproduct), environmental preservation. Even without the surveys presented in the article, innovation and advances in technology along with a public call for more attention to reducing pollution as well as government regulations provoke behaviors that point toward preserving the environment while simultaneously improving the financial position of organizations. The adoption of environmentally conscious manufacturing strategies leads to a number of benefits: reducing energy-related cost through sustainable sources, tax credits when sustainable improvements are made, expanding the customer base and attracting sustainably conscious consumers, positively impacting the global community and creating work-place cultures focused on continuous improvement. Because sustainability is a trend that will continue to be of interest to organizations and the community due to a continuously growing world population and the finite nature of our natural resources, longevity of both our planet and organizations depend upon behaviors that preserve the environment. Environmentally friendly manufacturing preserves the future of manufacturing and society. The results of the surveys indicate that a majority of firms favor source reduction, recycling and production process improvement over treatment and end-of-the-pipe control technology. The findings suggest that the efforts of firms to improve manufacturing processes and increase productivity create substantial opportunities for environmental improvement. (Florida, 1996).
