1 Essay Lesson 4 Amanda McDaid Eastern Gateway Community College MGT210 Teresa Miller 6/28/2023
2 The situation: A workplace conflict has arisen between two employees who are part of the same team. They both have ideas for the same situation. The conflict is affecting their working relationship, communication, and overall team dynamics, leading to decreased productivity and morale. Why Mediation is the Best Method in this Situation Mediation is the preferred method of dispute resolution in this situation because it allows for a collaborative and facilitated process of resolving conflicts. In a workplace setting, mediation provides a neutral and safe space for the employees to openly express their concerns, perspectives, and feelings. It allows them to engage in a constructive dialogue with the assistance of a trained mediator who facilitates communication, encourages active listening, and helps identify common ground and potential solutions. Mediation focuses on understanding the underlying issues, building empathy, and working towards a mutually agreeable resolution that addresses the needs and interests of both parties involved (mediation). Benefits : Mediation empowers the individuals involved by giving them a voice in the resolution process. It is a voluntary process that encourages active participation and ownership of the outcome. Mediation provides an opportunity for open and honest communication, allowing the employees to express their concerns, perspectives, and feelings in a constructive manner. It helps to improve understanding and rebuild trust. Mediation aims to preserve relationships by fostering a collaborative environment. It focuses on finding win-win solutions that address the underlying interests and needs of both parties, which can lead to improved working relationships and teamwork (BTMediationAdmin, 2022).
3 Drawbacks : If there is a significant power imbalance between the parties involved, mediation may not effectively address the underlying power dynamics, potentially disadvantaging the less powerful party. Mediation may not be suitable for situations where there are deep-seated conflicts, unresolved historical issues, or instances of misconduct or abuse. In such cases, alternative approaches or interventions may be necessary. Mediation relies on the willingness of both parties to engage in good faith and work towards a resolution. If either party is unwilling or resistant to the process, mediation may reach an impasse, requiring alternative dispute resolution methods to be explored (BTMediationAdmin, 2022). Overall, mediation in this situation can facilitate open communication, understanding, and collaborative problem-solving between the conflicting employees. It has the potential to address the underlying issues, restore working relationships, and improve team dynamics. However, it is important to recognize the limitations and potential challenges that mediation may present, and to assess the suitability of mediation based on the specific circumstances and dynamics of the conflict.
