Defeating the System: Ethics at Volkswagen 6-18. Are you surprised that an organization as large as Volkswagen was caught engaging in such unethical behavior? Do you agree that the organization’s culture could have encouraged this behavior? I am not surprised that an organization as large as Volkswagen was caught engaging in such unethical behavior. In today’s world, I’ve noticed a vast amount of large organizations are willing to cut corners just so they can get a profit. It has become so normal for companies to bend the truth within the product they’re selling so it’s hard to tell what’s worth it and what’s not. I do agree that the organization’s culture may have encouraged this because if an organization isn’t structured properly, its employees will not behave ethically. 6-19. Are there structural variables that may have influenced the unethical behavior at Volkswagen? Yes, I believe there are structural variables that have influenced the unethical behavior at Volkswagen. The company’s CEO Winterkorn has been considered a “hard-driving perfectionist” by many employees. It was also noted that he would publicly criticize some of his employees. In such a competitive environment where it is crucial to be making new and improved products, it is more likely for employees to engage in unethical actions. Concluding that employees would do whatever it takes to guarantee their company’s success. 6-20. Evaluate Volkswagen’s actions based on the factors in Exhibit 6-5. How would you describe the issue intensity of Volkswagen’s actions? Volkswagen’s actions have caused a great deal of harm to our environment and people. There is a vast amount of people in harm since there were over 11 million cars fitted with that software that are each polluting the environment. Many people agree that the consensus was wrong, it was even rated last out of 100 large companies on a poll taken. There is a significant amount of long-term negative effects that people may not notice right away, but within time it can be brutally harmful. 6-21. Moving forward, what do you think Volkswagen needs to do to avoid such an ethical lapse in the future? There are multiple ways that the upper management at Volkswagen can avoid such unethical behavior. They could get rid of the employees that installed the unethical software to ensure no new employees pick up on the abrupt behavior. Volkswagen can also have its new employees take an ethics training or certification test from an organization like NASBA. If Volkswagen doesn’t resolve the issue with unethical employees, the company will continue to plummet.
