Decision-Making Analysis 1 Attending Penn State World Campus and Choosing a Major Kayla Papanastasiou Penn State World Campus MGMT 301- Basic Management Concepts
Decision-Making Analysis 2 Attending Penn State World Campus and Choosing a Major I started my higher education at a branch campus through Penn State. This campus was Penn State Beaver, which was very small and close to home. After my freshman year, I pursued a major in Supply Chain Management with my advisors and guidance counselors. It became clear to me that I wanted more freedom and flexibility in my schedule. This led me on a search for all the opportunities I had. My goals for my sophomore year of college became clearer when I got my first apartment and started working full time. I needed to keep working for school and my living situation. My sister who graduated college in 2020, helped me find World Campus and we came up with a plan. If I wanted more flexibility, time, and open availability to maintain my lifestyle, then World Campus would be a great path! I had a lot of support from my family to help me make a rational decision and promote my success. As I went through a move and many changes to my daily routine, I talked to people in my community including my friends, mentors, and my boss about this transition. Some of my resources suggested I could be successful outside of school and would have growth opportunities elsewhere. I knew I wanted to stay in school and continue growing my independence. Community college was always an option but seemed to offer the same flexibility as the branch campus. My work ethic was seen and valued which was tempting when I was offered promotions, however I couldn’t ignore that my path was to continue my education through to the end. The research I did on each
Decision-Making Analysis 3 of my options was thorough based on everything I needed to think about and consider. I got a lot of information that led me to my decision. I weighed out my options based on my financial, physical and mental capabilities. It was tough to rule out working the hours I was, to compromise with my future class schedule. I would be making less money but still learning and growing my confidence in decision-making for the real world. I didn’t really benefit from going to in person classes or at least I found myself capable of doing my own self-study without as much help from my professors. Overall, I was excited to commit to World Campus and all that it offered. This was a choice I knew would not impact me significantly financially at all and would allow me to continue my lifestyle. My communication with administrators and advisors began as soon as I made my decision. I got a lot of support from everyone I spoke to about my credits, classes, schedule, expectations, needs, major, and more. It was quite a seamless transition which is just what I needed. I later learned the balance between all my priorities was very possible and it has made me more successful. My decision to join Penn State World Campus was an easy one. I gained a lot of experience and knowledge about my options, opportunities, and support. Each question I had was answered and this gave me hope and confidence in my choice. As I look back in my second semester of my sophomore year, I have spent this year continuing my studies, working, and maintaining a work-life balance. That decision led me to a lot of personal growth as an individual, student, and citizen.
