Briefly describe Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
“
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory in psychology comprising a five-tier model of human needs, often depicted as hierarchical levels within a pyramid” (Mcleod, 2023). It is essentially a pyramid of needs that motivate people. Maslow believes that physiological needs are the most basic and essential needs. If we are lacking in one or more of these needs, we are likely to meet these needs first before we can move on to others. For example, if we do not get enough sleep or food, we are bound to be tired and not productive. We will probably get rest and eat food before we can move forward and be productive.
How have you seen this theory at work in your workplace? Give specific examples of behaviors and indicate which level of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs the person exhibiting these behaviors is trying to meet. Please refrain from using any identifying features in your descriptions of these situations.
I have seen this theory at work before in my workplace. For example, I have been apart of a team
that did not communicate and liked to gossip about one another. This took away the needs for love and belonging and self-esteem. As a result, the team was not able to reach our goals in an efficient manner, and was often passive aggressive towards one another. When a team member began putting another person down, they were trying to meet their need of self esteem and acceptance of others. They wanted to make themselves look better by making the other person look bad. As a result, there was a huge lack of communication and efficiency.
Why might it be important for a manager or leader to be able to recognize these "needs" in fellow employees?
It is extremely important for a manager to be able to recognize these needs in fellow employees for various reasons. If they were to read Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs and put forth the effort to carry it out, business would see much more productivity. When a manager understands their employees needs, they will have a greater understanding of what their workers desire to get out of their job and how they can better motivate them. This can increase overall workplace morale and encourage employees to go the extra mile and perform to a higher ability.
What does the Bible say are or should be motivational factors for Christians? Give specific scripture references to support your answer.
1 Corinthians 15:58 says “
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (NIV). This verse is a perfect example of how God wants us to work. Our number one priority should always be our relationship with God, even when we’re at work. The ability to have a relationship
with God should be motivation enough for us as Christians to work hard for a better life. References
